Sports betting is here in Iowa

Wish this would have happened sooner so I could have put a little bit of money on my Browns to win some games. Now they are en vogue so there is no cash to be made.

is it really a great idea? - Not being a smart-ass, genuine question. Sportsbook has always been at the seedy end of the gambling world.

My understanding of the original bans was that it wasn't the pearl clutching "won't someone think of the children" crowd that got it banned, but rather it was the leagues and colleges that wanted it banned so as not to undermine the legitimacy of their product. Given widespread electronic communications and the feasibility of tracking down a kid across the country, this could be a really bad idea. I have no philosophical objection to gambling, but I agree, this has the potential to be really bad. I just hope Iowa comes out on the good side.

There will be a surge right at the start because of the novelty of it, but within the first year it will already be back down to just people who already used a bookie. Just like legalizing weed didn't turn 6,000,000 people into murderous Tommy Chongs who eat babies and burn bibles, this will just pickup a bunch of tax money and otherwise we won't notice a difference.

As far as corruption, adding some fixed games and intentionally missed kicks would be like pissing in the ocean. College football is so corrupt and dirty the way it is the net effect would be zero. It's already legal in Vegas and a ton of other states; a few thousand frat boys in Iowa with a betting app on their phones isn't exactly going to make waves in the sports gambling community.

Much ado about nothing.

Bookies are literally everywhere and you don't have to send your money to Dess Moyness.

That's what I've heard at least. From people I know who do it.

literally billions of dollars are already going overseas illegally to the Bahamas and Cayman islands and other offshore casinos. To me it makes a lot more sense to keep that money in the country, regulate it, and tax it.

People clearly want it, and its their money to burn if they want to. Sure beats opioids anyway

Respectfully, I think you're drastically underestimating the popularity of sports gambling. Sure, people can use bookies right now, but a lot of people don't even know how to get started with that. They don't exactly advertise themselves openly. Plus, you have others who are law abiding citizens and won't do that since it's illegal. The initial surge will be huge but it won't drop off much over time, in my opinion.

"Overall, up to $150 billion is wagered illegally on sports every year in the United States, according to the American Gaming Association, a trade group."

hmm. I enjoy Opioids... In small doses...

I know sites like draftkings and fanduel already have setup options for online sports betting from within their applications. Theyve been testing it for years. I'm sure in a few years we'll all be sitting in Kinnick betting on every single play.

We can disagree.

It will be a novelty to the people who don't already gamble. I don't believe we have the population makeup in this state that will go hog wild like New Jersey has. We don't have the numbers for one, and the demographic makeup couldn't be more different. You'll definitely have the 25-35 year old male demographic going hog wild, but the billion dollar volume that they have on the East Coast isn't going to happen.

If every man, woman, child (not counting passers through) lay down about $317 annually we got the 1 billion covered.

Probably true, but there are a lot of degenerate gamblers in Iowa. Like hard liquor, I think 10% of the population makes up an astronomical amount of the transactions.

Within a roughly 250 mile radius of New Jersey there are 8 NFL teams and 5 NBA teams, and god knows how many college football and basketball teams. That is a huge part of what makes the gambling such a big industry out there.

From Des Moines in the same radius there are 2 NFL teams and 1 NBA.

I know people disagree but it's just not going to be a big deal here. Everybody and their girlfriend will give it a shot when the phone apps come out, and then it'll be like the Christmas presents you played with for a week and then stuck in the closet.
