Special Teams?

How in the world are we not prepared for the onside kick? Minnesota hadn't stopped our running game the entire day, it seems pretty reasonable that the only way we would lose after they scored would be a pick, a fumble, or an onside kick. Do our coaches think that everyone is as conservative and scared to go for the win like they are? Minnesota had nothing to lose and they did the exact same thing last year.

Do we have a special teams coach? How do they not see that coming? Or the Wisconsin fake punt last yr? When was the last time we blocked a kick, returned a kick, or did anything creative on special teams? We used to do that in the early 2000's. Can you imagine how shocked Mich, MSU, or Nebraska would be if we faked a punt or a FG? I don't care if it doesn't work, it would be so refreshing to see us try anything new, especially in a big game.

Our linebackers coach is our special teams coach. We need a full time special teams coach because special teams has been horrendous the last few years. It has cost us quite a few games.

I just think we need a special teams coach to do his job. Perhaps we need one to devote solely to special teams but there are limits on the number of coaches the team can have. I'm sure there are a large number out there that pull double duty. Regardless, Wilson isn't doing his job.

How does that conversation go between Wilson and Ferentz?

KF: Darrell, what happened with the onsides kick?

DW: I don't know.

KF: Did you gather them up before the kickoff and tell them to look out for the onside?

DW: Uh . . .
