Something interesting.....

I hadn't even thought about until reading the write-up about Gill being the honorary captain. The 1981 Iowa team that went to the Rose Bowl (1982 Rose Bowl) broke a 23 year drought. We are currently at 23 years and counting, unless we can manage to make it this year (although if I understand correctly, the only way we make it is by being in the playoff since the Rose Bowl is one of the semi-final games this year). It's just weird to consider, as a guy who grew up with Hayden and the 3 Rose Bowls he made it to, that we haven't been there since the 1991 Rose Bowl. Granted, we've been to 2 Orange Bowls, but those certainly aren't the same.

Here's to hoping we can invade Pasadena sometime soon!

not completely apples to apples as you note. back in the day, big ten champ went to the rose bowl. who went to the rose bowl in 2002 when iowa went to the orange bowl, and osu the fiesta? you are right, not even a big ten team in the rose bowl.

call me traditional, but i miss the 'good old days'.

Miami v NU.

At some point, the B1G and the Pac needed to join the rest of Division 1 instead of hiding out in the irrelevant Rose.

Ya things have changed alot since the early 80s in regards to Bowls. Iowa would have gone to Rose in 2002 however due to BCS, Orange had first pick of teams and took Iowa. Rose got Oklahoma vs Wash St.

74Hunter, you are right B1G and Pac hadn't to play along. You are wrong RB > OB , I think you are trolling and that's cool. I enjoy your posts on this board though. :)

Old fashioned RB > 2002 season Rose Bowl.

Under pre-BCS rules, Ohio state would have went to the Rose Bowl against Wash. State in the 2002 season. Iowa probably would have played in the orange bowl against Big East Miami or in the sugar against Georgia. Worst case it would have played in the old Citrus Bowl.

Iowa hasnt been to the rose bowl in my lifetime. They played January 1st, and I was born 2 weeks later. Hurts to know that... Iowa shouldv gone in '02.

The "problem", if you will, was that people, especially media types, became dissatisfied with national champions that were "picked" and "voted" vs. "played". And in spite of the fact that "split" championships really weren't a bad thing, teams like 1997 Michigan (which "lost" points to the coaches), 1994 Penn State (which "lost" points for one close game that wasn't actually close or in doubt) and even 2003 USC (who would probably have beaten BOTH BCS Championship "entrants, LSU and Oklahoma, though the Trojans "won" the media side of the championship...er "bought" it) felt short-changed (PSU, in particular, was slighted).

The BCS wasn't "bad', and even the playoff system won't be "bad", but certain bowl traditions were "good". In spite of the fact that SOME conferences (Southwest cough***$EC cough***Pac 8/10***cough) played bowl games in their virtual back yards, there was something to be said for those traditions.

It may take a while to get excited about "playoff" games that don't feel as "natural"...

If you think Orange Bowl > Rose Bowl - then you haven't been to both. There is only one Grandaddy of the All. Have a small pile of $$ for the next Rose - and my household knows that has top priority over all.

Heck, I didn't necessarily feel much of a difference between the OB and Cap One or Outback. Never been to an Iowa RB, but I have been to two RBs. That experience is head and shoulders beyond the others.

It's cool.

I am trolling a little but IMO the OB has had much more significance in the national landscape of college football dating from the 70's until the BCS era. I recall many OBs being a factor in the national championship picture, while for the RB, not so much.

The OB will always have a special place in my heart in regards to football. Tons and tons of memories.

Your description is accurate, but that had everything to do with the teams playing and nothing to do with the bowl itself. I've been to both the Rose Bowl and the Orange Bowl (Rose in 1991 and Orange in 2003). There is no comparison whatsoever. The Rose is truly a college bowl game....with all the pomp and circumstance you would expect. Not to mention the breath-taking scenery as well as the weather. The Orange Bowl felt like corporate schlock and some sort of NFL game. And the weather sucked. Not to mention, the OB used to be in the $hittiest part of Miami in a stadium that looked like it was going to crumble at any moment. So while the OB may have historically had teams that decided a mythical NC, from a truly great game experience, atmosphere, etc.....there is no comparison whatsoever.

Even though I've never been to either, I can't say I disagree.

Of course, I'm not big on the pomp and circumstance, etc., I focus on the game. But if you're into that other stuff, I can understand how you feel.

OK, I attended one of the Hawkeye Rose Bowls in the 80's and attended the recent
Orange Bowl, where we crushed Georgia Tech. Even though it's much more fun to be in
California, rather than Miami..............the WIN at Orange Bowl was much, much more awesome.

And as a famous Californian recently said, Just Win Baby

The thing is, a couple years after 2002 the BCS changed it's format by adding the BCS Championship Game as a separate bowl. It also created a rule that said that the Rose Bowl got the first pick among Big Ten/Pac-10 teams (the Wisconsin-TCU game being an exception). So if these rules were in place, the 2002-03 BCS might have looked liked this:

NCG: 1 Miami vs. 2 Ohio State
Rose: 6 Wazzu vs. 5 Iowa
Orange: 14 FSU vs. At-Large
Sugar: 3 Georgia vs. At-Large
Fiesta: 7 Oklahoma vs. At-Large

At-larges would have likely been USC, Notre Dame, and Texas or K-State. Wazzu would have gone to the Rose despite being ranked lower than SC, as they beat SC earlier in the season (Which I think was the tie breaker? correct me if wrong).
