Some player thoughts

This team goes when Gessell goes...PERIOD. Anyone who thinks Marble and the Hawks are better with him at PG are flat out wrong. Also how much longer can Fran and crew only give Gabe 14 minutes. I mean 17 points, 10 rebounds in 14 minutes. What could he do with 20+ minutes? Aaron White needs to get his MOJO back...it is simply confidence. When he does we will beat anyone on any given night at any given location. The talking heads are high on us...as with most "teams" it becomes if and when all the parts start functioning as one. I believe we are on the cusp of that happening...MSU win and watch out for the Hawks the rest of the way!

EDIT: Misspelled Gabe

I think this quote sums up what Fran is looking for with this team "A basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you can get them all together, you have a fist. That's how I want you to play."

I could be wrong but I think Gabe had 14 pts in 17 minutes. And he didn't play more because we were up 25+ and we cleared the benches.

The truth is our bench personnel has been inconsistent. Gabe was bad just 1 game ago.

I look at it this way: Our center position had 23 points and 16 rebounds. Woody played great defense and passed well. Gabe played solid defense and ran the floor well. I don't care who plays how many minutes, as long as we get that kind of contribution out of that position.

Not to say we aren't a good team, but this was the mighty Wildcats of Northwestern we were playing. Gabe will not produce like that against teams like MSU or Michigan. I'm not saying he shouldn't play his minutes..but don't expect a double double Tuesday against Sparty. Expect White and Marble to lead us against good competition

Wildcats #18 defensive team in the NATION...3 game win streak...beat Indiana on the road...

I strongly disagree with this. Just how I feel doc..

What part do you strongly disagree with exactly? That you don't like production out of our center position?

Are you saying you would like Gabe to take the majority of Woodbury's minutes or the other way around? I say play the hot hand.

No doubt Gessell has been very solid at the point. The thing that is so great about this time is that it can be any of the top 9 that step up and have a great game. I'd really like to see Clemmons have a great game soon to build his confidence … he's very capable. His stats aren't bad he just needs to get some PT.

I know I'm just a fan but I do not trust Clemmons with the ball in his hands. Almost like a turnover or a poor foul waiting to happen. Just my thoughts though.

Clemmons played well today. He didn't score or do anything flashy but he didn't look lost or down on himself. I like his body language much better.

Gesell needs to keep doing what he is doing: lots of time handling the ball with a lot of assists, almost no turnovers and in-your-face defense. Points will come, but these three things have been steady for him all season.

If you remember, Gabe was in the middle of the zone defense on an under-the-basket out of bounds play and let a Michigan player catch and shoot a layup as though he didn't even see him. In the Michigan game he simply looked lost and confused on defense for most of the minutes he played, and he's. I was watching the replay tonight and Woody would have had four more assists if the guys he passed to under the basket weren't fouled in the act of shooting or made the open bunnies; not to mention he sets much better picks for the shooters.

White is fine. He didn't have to get involved in the game today, so he didn't. He still did a lot of other things well. He just didn't score as much.

Plus, this was Northwestern... 10-11 Northwestern.

Totally agree on Gesell. We're at our best when he's playing well, because he's creating opportunities for teammates with great passing AND taking pressure off Marble/White by dropping in points of his own. By the time he's a senior, Mike is going to be something special.

Our boys better bring their lunches on Tuesday.....Home game, MSU coming to town....it's time they all put their best effort forward and send Izzo packing....let's have a complete game, from start to finish, bench players included....the last few games, our bench has seemed a little lost out there....have to be strong w/the ball, run an efficient offense, rebound and play hard-nosed "D".....nothing is better than that (and watching Izzo cry a river on the sidelines)....gonna be a knock down, drag out of a game, bitter fight to the end.....and I know we will revel in the victory afterwards....

Gesell is the most under-rated player in the conference.

With Iowa's depth, we have 2 fists. No other team in the league can say that. That is why I believe that Fran's most important task each game is to figure out how we can force up tempo and run, run, run, run and then run some more. The good teams that can, will try to slow it down against us to keep our second fist on the bench.
