What bothers me as much as losing is being a 'SOFT' program. This program is definitely soft and getting softer by the season now. Is this a reflection of our head coach?

Maybe I bought into this mythical hype that we were supposed to be running a 'blue' collar, hard-working, physical football program but this season is full of visual evidence that a large portion of our players cannot stand physical contact of any kind.

Defense -> Some of the most pathetic tackling I have ever seen. Our players typically run around trying to grab jerseys, dive at the feet of opponents and look for ways to jump on an opponents back as they are advancing the ball down the field. Most players are reluctant to deliver a blow or make a fundamental wrapping tackle. All of this leads to countless additional yards after contact. How many runs that should net little or no gain typically net 3-5 yards? A TFL or sack is an absolute anamoly as we are fortunate to see one per game.

Offense -> The offensive line which has experience and size is the most disappointing unit on this team. Instead of absolutely asserting themselves physically we instead witness countless examples of lineman taking turns escorting a defender back to our RB or QB. Instead of finishing drives or salting away the opponent we have to rely on some kind of trickeration. At least the D-Line has an excuse in terms of personnel lost to the NFL. With a supposed offensive line guru as the head coach you would think we could figure out how to dominate a line of scrimmage over the course of a season.... oh yes that was in 2002.

Was the shirt James Vandenburg wore this past spring about 'Hard work outperforms talent when talent does not work hard' just lip service?

When did this cycle of 'softness' begin? Was it immediately after our Orange bowl win 2 years? My god how long can we let this go on?!

You're 'special' alright.

Chris Doyle USED to be so highly thought of.
He's obviously not doing his job and is far from one of the best.

Yes... it may have. I'm thinking the graduation of a guy like Pat Angerer had a lot to do with it

I think soft is the michigan state defense that somehow has an injury every other play. We can't be too soft if we are hurting their players that often

and yet still couldnt put up any or enough points agianst the guys they brought in.
You cant be serious.Nice lameass attempt though.

Even though I'm not so sure about the "SOFTNESS" of things. Its an attitude thing Iowa doesn't bury bad teams. All of Iowa's football schemes are ancient. Almost zero aggressiveness on playing call on all three sides of the ball. I don't think soft is the right word maybe medium or lightly firm.

Take a look at the roster, I don't remember when Iowa had that many freshmen, reshirt FR playing, or players that haven't played much until this year or late last year. Thats the softness in the program.

Soft all over the field. Our db's got out worked, out jumped and hell we we're diving at ankles when I know Norm or Kirk would never teach that. We need Bob Sanders back to teach a little technique and moxie because we look soft and slow. I can't help but think of Miller getting out snatched and Hyde tackling the turf out there. You think mike stoops wouldn't fly off the handle if he saw that? Call him up....

College football will have to address the fake injury thing. Teams are doing it all across the nation right now. Not exactly sure what the solution is though. Maybe if a defensive player can't get off the field twice in a game, he can't come back in? IDK, but they need to do something.

That being said, defenses should have a reasonable ability to substitute.

At least have to sit out a quarter.
