Soccer: the next big sport for U.S. adults?

Interesting piece. The writer suggests the paying U.S. sports fan is tiring of big stadiums, loud PA interruptions, high prices and play interrupted or slowed by TV time-outs, and may be more inclined to choose soccer as the sport grows in this country. Having attended college and professional football and basketball games in recent years, there is something attractive about a competition played in a more intimate setting, as most professional soccer stadiums are now, lasting only 90 minutes, with no TV timeouts or delays and precious little noise and banter from the PA.

There's no more intimate setting than Notre Dame stadium. And you want to know what the fans want? Loud PA interruptions and big screen video boards.

Soccer to me, is one big TV timeout.

PA announcements -- even in soccer venues to announce who just scored a goal or who's entering/exiting the match -- are annoying to me. Just start the game and let me as a fan appreciate or disapprove of what I'm watching. You don't have to try to drum up false enthusiasm or -- god forbid -- pump in noise just to make it exciting.

Different strokes for different folks, I reckon.

I doubt I'll ever be a soccer fan. I've watched. I've attended matches. Just isn't my thing. But I do enjoy minor league sports for many of the reasons you mentioned.

For most of my 29 years on this planet I hated soccer. Then about 3 years ago I started playing Fifa and it made me understand the flow of the game more. Since then I have been watching soccer on a regular basis and enjoying it more and more. I have became a Chelsea fan and the game that really made me a serious fan was the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Fifa has converted many, except the old farts too old for gaming.

Vuvuzelas say hello. The reason why its quiet is because its boring.

And this is coming from a guy who played kickball for many years, until I realized I had a little talent and started playing sports.

Wrong answer.

Right answer.

Vuvuzelas are banned and were only in one World Cup because it was in South Africa. Guess that's the thing to do over there. Soccer matches are far from quiet, I would argue they are the loudest, continuous noise in sports, in America and across the globe. I wish all sports fans had the enthusiasm to sing the national anthem before games like the USMNT American Outlaws; letting the crowd sing the national anthem for the WCQ game in KC on Friday was amazing.
