So who is going to punt for us next year?

Word on the street is Bruce bought a second five year chunk of eligibility for Colt 45 (that's Bruce's nickname for him).

It's obscure, but there is indeed an NCAA rule whereupon if a student-athlete’s uncle donates more than $5 million in a one-time sum, said nephew or niece will receive a second, non-transferable set of athletic eligibility.

Unfortunately there is a clause that says if the donation level exceeds $5 million, the student athlete is guaranteed a minimum of two years in a starting position. That's what burned us in '17 and '18.

Seems like the Sleep guy has only been marginally better than Rastetter?

Rastetter have another year so Kirk might settle on him or is he gone after this year too?

Sleep-Dalton 43 punts for 42.0 average this year (7th in B1G)
Rastetter 53 punts for 38.9 average last year (13 in B1G)

Well Sleep-Dalton avgs about 4 more yards per punt which doesnt sound like a lot but he is much more consistent and his punts usually are higher with better hang time so there are little or no runback.

Rastetter got some very long punts off with a lot of roll using the rugby style but then other teams got used to having multiple returners who could field the ball before it rolled.

Coaches like that consistent high , long hang time, 40+ yard punt

Forgot to mention the clause that requires the nephew to play at a verifiable seventh grade level.

with our high powered offense, we won't be punting

Moderately better than. Not as good as that last transfer we had, or it seems that way anyway. Coluzzi or something like that. Maybe because he was better at dropping the ball inside the 15 than Sleeper is.

Punting stats have to be taken contextually. Because when they are punting from around midfield they aren't trying to kick it 60 yards. They are trying to pin it inside the 10. Which can significantly lower that total avg. Punts inside the 10 are way more valuable then a 65 yard punt with a 25 yard return ever are.

Last year Rastetter was 94th in the nation for gross punting average; Iowa was 89th in net punting at 36.93 yds/punt.

This year Sleep-Dalton is 56th in the nation for gross punting average; Iowa as a team is 61st in net punting at 38.51 yds/punt.

Nick Phelps who punted at Woodbury Central has transferred in from NDSU. As a senior he averaged 44.4 yards per punt with a long of 81 yards, was All-Iowa Elite Team by the Des Moines Register, a Kohl's All-American, and the Shrine Bowl all-star punter. I think he'll have a decent shot at the job.
