So what if Ricky does not get injured?

THere is already a 'cup half empty thread' here............what about the half-full one? I much prefer the what if............

1) We beat Northwestern, instead of falling to them 17-10, with Ricky getting injured, as we lead 10-0, on our way to 10 win 0 losses.

then,

2) The next week, with Ricky, we go in to C'bus and rip them a new one, instead of getting beat in overtime.

Right now, we would be looking forward to playing in the a) Rose Bowl or b) Rose Bowl...........one week later. :)

I dont think Stanzi could have played any better than James did at Ohio State IMO....we still would have lost if you did nothing in your scenario except change out the QB's.....and beating NW wouldnt have mattered since PSU didnt beat OSU

Iowa would be 11-1 instead of 10-2. The only difference is there would be no debate on whether or not Iowa was going to a BCS game.

Vandenburg's effort at OSU one could argue that it was probably the most complete QB performance of the season.

Of course it would've mattered...11-1 trumps 10-2...there would've been no debate about who should get a bcs game, Iowa or PSU...and maybe, just maybe, the ESPN d-bags wouldn't be able to lead the sheep down the road of "the orange bowl is the least interesting game" for 2 weeks before putting up a poll asking which game is the mosting interesting...

Yeah, you could say that - you could also say that Vandenberg should have had 2 more picks than he ended up with - one got called back due to an OSU penalty, the other was the result of 3 OSU players colliding - and that he also made some critical mistakes, liking taking a sack in OT to take his team out of field goal range.

Don't get me wrong, Vandenberg blew away any expectations that anyone may have had for him that night, but he looked green enough, and made enough mistakes that it should be obvious to anyone that Stanzi should be the starter.

Bingo...even if Stanzi only matches JVB's regulation performance, he probably doesn't go "rookie" in the OT.

It was weird, because up until then, Vandenberg didn't seem to be affected at all by the setting of what was on the line. He was getting rid of the ball when he needed to, which is something we've all bitched about with Stanzi.

Then overtime started, and the weird play calling, and it just seemed like the enormity of the moment got to him just a bit.

And then a walk-on 26 year old kicker makes a field goal 3 yards longer than any other one he had made.

I think we end up 12-0. Agree on Vanderburg's play but Stanzi was the leader and our preparation for OSU had to change.

I think that's when the moment hit JVB...up until then it was "go out there, no pressure, down by 14, let's see what happens"...when OT hit, I think he had his first "oh sh!t" moment because in OT you can't get past the game being on the line...that's when the freshman in him came out...and their kicker had no pressure, at home, tie game...instead of trying to tie it up to get to a second OT.

Edit: I shouldn't say "no pressure" it was still to win the game, but he had the intangibles of the situation on his side...not to mention he's 26 and a former pro athlete so he was probably better equipped emotionally to deal with the situation.

hawkdoctor: Yes indeed. Great minds do think alike. If we roll on and beat NW, with a healthy Ricky, then we also win in Ohio. Ohio needed bad horse-collar call help, a couple of dropped passes, a missed chip shot field goal and overtime to beat the Hawkeyes.

12-0 would've been a sweetness that NO HAWKEYE fan, alive today, has ever tasted before. The pure bliss & Sweeeeeeeeetness was so close :p

And if KF didn't trust JVB at the end of the 4th quarter, why the confidence in him in OT? That's all water under the bridge now and I'm not trying to reopen that can of worms, but what's the old saying "Play for the win on the road, play for OT at home?" We can second guess that one forever, but I'll never agree with the decision not to go for it in regulation.

That said, I think with Stanzi, we win the NW game and still may have lost in Columbus, for an 11-1 record and a higher final ranking. A little more prestigous in the eyes of the BCS, and maybe we go to the Fiesta Bowl instead of the Orange?

Maybe. In the eyes of us (the fans) the Fiesta was clearly the more attractive game. Florida has become somewhat "old hat", and Phoenix would have been a new and exciting place to go.

That being said, the payout is the same for both games, and Iowa may garner a bit more respect by beating Ga. Tech than they would have in a win over Boise State.

I don't think it's a matter of Kirk not having confidence in his QB at the end of the 4th. I think it is/was a matter of not wanting this to happen.

The problem is that this scenario is incredible because it's so rare.

What's very common is the team that loses the coin toss in OT losing the game.

We had the ball and had control. Kirk surrendered control (on the road) to a coin toss. Then, picked the noisiest part of the stadium, too, which I don't understand.

Kirk blew it in almost everyone's view except for his. He's content with his decision because it's respectable to lose in OT and it's not respectable to lose with the ball and less than a minute left. He made the NFL choice.

I think that after what happened at MSU, if Stanzi is in the game with the 52 seconds or whatever it was, they take a chance or two instead of sitting on the ball. The rest of the game could very well have played out the same way, but that is the big difference IMHO.

Thanks for the video, Shada. Anytime I see the Gophers lose it makes me smile. :)

Someone said that beating Northwestern wouldn't have mattered, and yes that is true in terms of bowl seeding but we'd have a Big Ten championship trophy if we had beaten them.
