so i thought archie was supposed to contribute

pretty sure mccaffery said he didn't think he'd contribute initially but after seeing the last few weeks of practice he would

Ohh...how should I put this... Archie just isn't very good at basketball. Lick did a lot of truly inexplicable things as our basketball coach, giving Archie a scholarship might be the most inexplicable...well other than thinking basketball teams don't need point guards.

You know, one of the many reasons I quit posting/reading the Hawks Nest was because of this topic. When Lickliter offered Archie it wasn't because of his basketball skills, it was because it was one of Lil' Licks friends from HS. Lickliter had a close relationship with the family and offered him a scholarship. Additionally, Lickliter wasn't recruiting point guards because he envisioned his son starting or at least gathering quite a few minutes.
That site was so pro-Lickliter that it was amazing.
Another time, I boarded a flight from Virginia Beach to Atlanta. On the plane I happened to sit next to the NCAA head of officials, Mr. John Adams. He was in Norfolk watching a game the night before and was heading to Tennessee to watch Memphis vs. Tennessee game later that day through Atlanta. He was very intelligent about Iowa basketball growing up in Indiana and knew Lickliter very well. Said he was too quirky and disliked in social circles at Butler and they were glad to see him leave. I said... I wish Iowa would have gotten Bruce Pearl and he rolled his eyes and said, "no you don't... he is dirty and his recruiting will eventually get him into lots of trouble, not to mention that freshman class of his. They won't stay out of serious trouble longer than a year... You didn't want either one of those guys."
When I got off the plane to head to my connection to Tampa, I was like WTF?
You know what? Everyone but one person on the message board over there said I made that up!!!! That there was no way I talked to the head of NCAA officials on a plane. Uh?? I did, and that happened, and they were so ****** off about his Lickliter comments that they refused to believe it. Man... was he right on all accounts.

BTW... he told me many stories about Lickliter. From High School through college, and his coaching days at Butler... I got the feeling these two were enemies or dated the same chick at some point.
He could write a book on the Lickliter, but nobody would read it. Also, later that year I was in Dayton Ohio staying (ironically) at the same hotel Tennessee was at when they lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The meeting room was on the third floor right above my room and I could hear Coach Pearl yelling at his players for being out so dang late (1 am) on the day they lost. One of those players was our old player, Tyler Smith.... who was very rude when I met him in the lobby earlier and said I was a fan of his from his Hawkeye days. He was... like the barrage of women... was trying to get on Chism's sack. That Chism dude was like a Wilt Chamberlain to women and his teammates. When he said jump or whatever, they did. Straight up pimp.

Imo only time Archie contributes is if someone is hurt, when we are either in foul trouble, or we play somebody similar to DeShawn Sims and we put in Archie for a couple of defensive minutes.

Also... I was really upset that Lickliter used University funds to take an overseas trip. This is something the NCAA only allows once every 4 years and he was using it up on him, his son, Tucker, Bawinkel, etc. Just a waste of a recruiting tool. Should have saved that trip, but he seen the writing on the wall... He coached in Saudi Arabia back in the early 90's but was kindly asked to leave. Similar to his Iowa gig.
For the life of me I can't figure out how he won at Butler. It had to be that he just stayed out of the way. He also knew he didn't have enough power to allow his son to play at Butler, but that Iowa would allow such shinanigans. Not only was Iowa dumb enough to hire him, they allowed him to play his son.
Iowa also allowed him to give a scholarship to a family friend who isn't even good enough to play small college level. Quite ridiculous how ignorant us Iowans can be. I think we just figure people know what they are doing. For this I called him a snake oil salesman, and we were buying by the gallons.
He sold us this system, we paid for this cure-all system that he was selling. He continuously stated the only reason we were not winning with it was his players weren't buying into it! It was very DARK DAYS of Iowa basketball, and we can only blame ourselves for not doing the homework. Just once... if anyone did research.

BTW, I worked at the US Embassy in the UAE 3 years after the possible Lickliter incident of 03... what he says happened isn't the truth. He didn't choose to leave... he was told to leave, and it wasn't because of hostile enemy threats. However... I do not know what he did that led to this order, I wish I did. I attempted to find out, but with little results. Probably not a big enough fish for that pond, not worthy of a comment?

He played on a HS team that had a losing record. He hung out with the Lickliter family. He went to college at Vincennes University in Vincennes, IN. In his last season there he averaged 6 pts per game and started 19 of 30 games.

What part of the paragraph above gets him a scholarship to the University of Iowa?
BUZZ? Alex... what is the second sentence?

I was not a huge fan of Licks. But come on man...the stuff you are bringing up is really obscure and it's obvious you have some sort of axe to grind with the guy. It's over...the university has moved on....it's time for the fans to do so.
