Six Underrated Players In College Basketball « CBS Philly

From article:

Roy Devyn Marble, Iowa. The Hawkeyes have been one of the surprises of the college basketball season and Marble has been a big reason. The athletic 6-6 senior guard is the son of Roy Marble, Iowa’s all-time leading scorer, and has put himself in position to become Iowa’s first Big Ten player of the year. Marble leads the Hawkeyes in scoring at 16.5 points per game and is a lockdown defensive player who often guards the opposing team’s best perimeter player. He was the catalyst for No. 16 Iowa’s win over Michigan on Saturday, scoring 22 of his 26 points in the first half, hitting 6 of 9 from 3-point range while helping hold the Wolverines’ Nik Stauskas to 10 points.

Good read, but not sure how a potential conference POY is "underrated". Seems to me like he's getting the credit he rightfully deserves and not the type of player I would consider underrated.

This. I was fully expecting Iowa's plug to be about Gesell.

I thought it was going to be about Aaron White. B1G knows him, but not too sure anyone else does.

If this were a BTN article, I would have gone with Gesell.

Probably because he was nowhere near any national media's radar to be in contention for an award like that before the season...???

Hmmm.... Not sure if I agree with you.

BUT, since your name is "sportstalent" and we are talking about talent in sports, you have persuaded me. Well done.

This is an honest question...Devyn at the next level? Do you think he can guard a 2 or 3 in the NBA? Do you think he can score at the next level from the 2 or 3 spot? Just wondering what most think about that.

I have my doubts but Marble has continued to exceed my expectations over his career. Offensively I don't think Marble will be a guy who gets the ball at the top of the key and is asked to make his own shot, but if placed beside a couple all stars could be a decent running mate. He has a high basketball IQ and has shown capable of making open shots and is able to drive the lane if he finds a crease. Defensively is where I think he needs to prove he can guard the quicker guards in the NBA. He's been a very good defensive player in college for the most part. He's going to need to bring it like he did against Michigan night in and night out and continue to improve as well.

I'm going to be completely honest here. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about sports in general and college basketball specifically....but I am seriously terrible at predicting whether a player will be good in the NBA or not.

It seems to be some kind of alchemy which my brain does not process. If someone would have told me in 2012 that Harrison Barnes and Steph Curry would be on the same team, and one would average 24 points per game and the other would average 10...I would have whiffed something awful.

I think Dev could make it in the NBA, sure. Mike Conley Jr. averages 18 & 6. Can't be that hard.

I am with you here, but the one thing that seems to be the underlying factor in the NBA is just flat out athleticism, for that reason I don't believe Marble will be even a role player in the NBA, but I don't understand the NBA and how players make it or don't make it, so in the end, I could be very wrong.

I think Marble's athleticism is sometimes underrated. He is not lightning quick side to side or first step wise, however it seems like when he gets a few steps in he is pretty solid.

I know Marble is projected as a early 2nd round pick. If he gets picked by the right team it would be interesting to see him develope. He will only turn 22 this fall around NBA training camp time so he is pretty young. I think if all he has to do is focus on basketball he could make some nice improvements to be a solid role player in the NBA and hopefully have a decent career. He is so young that the has time to grow into his body more and fill out and put on some more strenght. The NBA has the best coaches, nutritionists and strength coaches. If Marble is willing to work hard and put in the right situation he can hang around the league.

NBA defense is really about team defense and working hard. There are very few perimeter players who are shut down defenders. Marble has the bball IQ and just needs to focus 100% while on defense to beable to defend at the NBA level. Marble struggles most against those very quick PG but he will not be guarding those guys in the NBA.

Marble's shooting form is not awful and getting better coaching and more opportunity to just get shots up I think he can improve upon his shooting. He will really need to him open 3 point shots as part of his skill set.
Marble is versitle, has lenght, enough athleticism to find a spot. It will just depend on what spot he finds and how hard he works in my opinion.

Marble will get a shot in the league, whether he's a late second round pick or signs as an UFA, he will get in somebody's camp, but if he has a chance to stick it's going to depend on his shooting. He has the NBA frame, he's a good ballhandler, much improved defender, if he can show that he can knock down the 3 consistently he could sneak onto somebody's roster.

I have always looked at Marble to be a less talented version of Evan Turner, they have some of the same qualities, but Turner is much stronger. The rest of their game is similar, but I am poor at projections to the NBA as I said.

I thought Barry Stevens from Johnny Orr's teams would make it in the Pros.....

Barry Stevens played 6 minutes with the Warriors.....

However I think Devyn can make it because of his unique style of play. Never can be sure what he is going to do with the ball. He is a very clever passer and can play D very well, but one never knows.....

Seems like a lot of articles regarding Devyn have a phrase like "son of Roy Marble", and we all know that every game on TV has at least one shot of dad. I wonder if that's at least a little bit irritating to Devyn.

Why would it be??? :rolleyes::mad:
