SIAP: New Fran Video

Concerning. For one there was a flagrant 1 foul called when he said no foul was called on any or the plays in question. Second, he is making this worse by being combative instead of reasonable as to the concerns people have and calm in his response. I think there are plenty of people who look at the plays and have concerns. He can choose not to answer the questions, politely, but do not tell people not to question him or Woodbury. Respect is earned and not guaranteed.

The thing you're probably not understanding is exactly what all these talking heads aren't understanding. During Fran's postgame interview he was asked FOUR times about the eye poking. He calmly answered the first two questions about it while dancing around the officials. It wasn't until the THIRD time he was asked about it that he finally got fed up.

Its like Fran even said, the media is trying to back him into a corner or trying to get him to say something he doesnt want to say and he was fed up with it. Perfectly understandable. Fran says he doesnt care at all about what these people say and I believe him. Good for him

This is just my opinion, but I think Fran is being overly combative so everyone comes after him. Fran knows Woody isn't meaning to poke people in the eye. I'm sure Fran knows he's told Woody to get a hand in a guys face and knows he's just doing what he's been taught to do. Now you could argue that Fran's temperament is making things worse. In fact it probably is in regards to the national pundits chiming in. But I think Fran believes Woody was going to take unfair criticism regardless, so this is his way of jumping in front of it. May not be how others would handle it, but it's how he has decided he's going to defend Woody. Ultimately, I can respect him for that.

Fran is who he is. I think it's a little ridiculous that people in the media have called him a bully. He's not a bully at all. He's just an intense guy who doesn't have much patience and he isn't afraid to speak his mind. A bully seeks out people to prey upon. Fran isn't doing that. He's just reacting a bit harshly in an uncomfortable situation where he feels like 1. He needs to stick up for his player and 2. He honestly can't talk about the officiating and clearly he gets tired of being asked about it.

So the guy is a head coach who doesn't walk on eggshells around the media. In some ways that's kind of refreshing. I can't you how many times I've listened to Fran and Ferentz interviews and thought to myself "Good god who is asking that ******* question?". He wears his emotions on his sleeve. Big deal. I guarantee you if you had the chance to talk to him one on one he's a very nice guy. His players love him. Woodbury said Fran has been real since he got to Iowa. He's always had their backs. This is who he is. Its best just to accept the good with the bad.

The media gets pi$$ed when coaches only speak in "coach speak". And then they get their panties in a wad when the coaches speak their mind. As far as I'm concerned the media can "F" themselves!

Wrong on your first point. He said no foul was called on the floor in any of the 3 incidents. He also specifically said the refs went to video review on the recent one and assigned a flagrant, and he was ok with that.

Lots of people seem to align the Flagrant 1 assigned by the refs after the play to intent on Adam's part. If they had concluded it was intentional it would have been a Flagrant 2 and he would have been ejected.

Hayden used to get pissy with the media and nobody cared. I don't see why some people get upset with Fran. He tells it like it is and doesn't hold back. Just like Hayden did.

Middle aged, white sportswriters love to find things to get outraged about.

This!

I'm just glad that Fran made the statement that if he thought Adam was doing it on purpose they wouldn't have to ask the questions because he would suspend him, himself... and he went on to say there is no place in the game for that type of play.

Just lead a news conference off with that statement!

Agreed.

This is a good point. By ruling a flagrant 1, the guys who get paid to make the call made the decision it wasn't intentional.
