Should Myron Rolle's commitment be questioned?

Absolutely not. I think that is absurd of the NFL teams. I think they're afraid he may own them someday. What a crock of ****.

I think any NFL team that didn't draft him will be fools...I wanted him for the Bears BADLY...This kid is the kind of person Goodel wants in the NFL...he has his priorities straight and got punished for it.

Rhodes scholar, graduated in 2.5 years, all conference safety, wants to build a medical clinic in the Bahamas . . . Why isn't this guy getting the publicity of St. Timmy? This is the kind of person the NCAA and NFL should be hyping up.

I completely agree, although to be fair ESPN gave him quite a bit of coverage.

Maybe he didn't get drafted early because he wasn't that great when he played. He is a physical safety but he stiff and not great in coverage.

But he's still worth a good long look. Anybody who questions his commitment should listen to all the people who said he came back from Oxford looking in the best shape of his career. If he didn't really care about football, you would expect him to come back a little soft. He instead came back in better shape than ever before and hit the ground running.

He had 1 interception in three years. His coverage skills are suspect for the NFL. Why doesn't he get the same recognition as Tebow? Tebow set the mark for a college QB. Rolle was not even close to that level of play. In fact, one could argue the only reason we heard about Rolle was because of the Rhodes Scholar thing.

Pat Haden is a fooball analyst. Steve Young is a football analyst. Robert Smith is a football analyst. Haden = Rhodes Scholar, Young = attorney, Smith = supposedly quit the NFL to be a doctor.

The only guy I can think of who quit football to go do something else and actually ended up doing it was Napoleon Kaufman and that guy was a midget (sorry, person of small stature.)

I just think the whole lack of commitment thing is getting blown out of proportion. Sounds like something an agent cooked up. But, who knows? Maybe the reason Jevan Snead didn't get drafted at all is because he has more "options" than even Rolle.

Yep, not quite ready to buy the discrimination argument in this case.

Agreed. He also hasn't played football in an entire year. So I think it's a great story and he sounds like a great kid, but I think he will be a very average NFL player and the 6th round was probably about right for a player with his talent.

Taylor Mays has lousy coverage skills too, and he was taken in the second round. All he is is a freak athlete, not that special of a football player, IMO. He's just TAYLOR MAYS, USC.

Rolle's athletic ability isn't close to Mays's. Of course you're going to take more of a chance on a guy with questionable coverage skills and spectacular, off-the-charts athletic ability than a guy with questionable coverage skills and solid, unspectactular (by NFL standards) athletic ability.

He was good when he played, he just hasn't played in over a year and is trying to get back into football shape.

It is absoltuely fair to question his committment to football. What if he winds up being a back up, or a special teams player. Do you think he will sit on the bench for 3 years instead of going to med school?

Let me make an anology. Suppose you want to be a cop, but you are stuck being a teacher instead. Do you think that guy is going to give his all to being a teacher, or is he going to spend at least some of his time pursuing the field he is really interested in?

This isn't a guy who's just playing football for kicks. Rolle has said time and again that playing in the NFL has been a lifelong dream. Just because he has set more than one goal in his life doesn't mean he should be punished for it. Now if he were to get injured (particular if it were fingers/hands/forearms) then he may call it quits rather than try to keep going, just because that could affect what he wants to do AFTER football. The guy just isn't shortsighted, and realizes there's life after football. Right, let's pay the guys who are too stupid to realize that millions and let the guys who have a future off the field as well as on it take the pay cuts.

Again, anyone who thinks Rolle is going to be a doctor, should look up the career aspirations of Robert Smith, Steve Young, Rick Neuheisal, Pat Haden... History is littered with guys who supposedly were going to leave football for private industry who ended up back in football in some form.

I still think this is something an agent cooked up. Did teams ask him about his commitment to football? Sure. Did teams ask every player they interviewed about their commitment to football? Absolutely!

Anybody buying this as some special discrimination against Rolle is pretty naive.

Personally I think if anybody thinks that NFL teams would not do this to someobody is pretty naive also.

NFL teams, or any employer for that matter, have the right not to hire someone who they feel will not devote the effort to their job. It's their call to make, not yours.

IF an NFL team thinks that a player will help their team they will take ANYONE, Look at the list a criminals get chances in the NFL. Vick, Rothlesberger, Claret, Owens, Pac-Man, it goes on and on and on......

And I'm saying there's no real reason to think that Rolle wouldn't devote himself to football. Like I said, it's one of his lifelong dreams to play in the NFL. Just because he's not short-sighted, and set more than one life goal for himself, does not mean he will slack off on any of them. Should his commitment to being a neurosurgeon be questioned because of his strong desire to play football? Absolutely not.

Absolutely yes.

To become successful in football or nuerosurgery, one must dedicate all of their time to it. There is no such thing as "part-time Med School", nor can a football player take time off to crack open some cadavers.

Do you really think that it will be easy for him to pick up medicine on the fly after spending 5 years in the NFL? Medicine is a fast paced and evoloving field, and you cannot pop in and out of it at your liesure...just like football.

If he were deciding between to less demanding careers, I would say he could handle it. But not two incredibly intense and competitive fields like football and medicine.
