Should Iowa go away from traditional I-Formation In 2020

22 formation if you will which is our bread and butter. Seems with Goodson Iowa runs better without the fullback.

The most underappreciated position in sports...the fullback.

A fullback that can block and catch the ball can be a game changer.

You take away the fullback, then what...tight ends? Where do you draw the line!?? Stop this madness at once!

I like the fullback in certain situations but they could have also mixed in Young at Fullback much more than they did. It would have given us another threat in run and pass game.

A true offense switch I don’t think will happen with Kirks philosophy but there are tons of ways to vary it up. Just watch KC, SF, NE, or a few other relative offenses on Sunday. The biggest change needs to be moving away from tendencies and focus on creating mismatches

Iowa’s rush scheme is absolutely BROKEN. Our ypp on the ground is awful. Has been for years. Heck the most dynamic back we have had in last decade (Wadley) averaged LESS THAN 4 ypc as a senior. Seems impossible

We do not have the great linemen with quickness and great feet to run the outside zone very well.

Watching the first half of the Nebby game again we didnt run much outside zone but rather more inside zone and straight ahead power with some pulling linemen. Some blocks were missed for some bad runs but overall the holes were there and Goodson and Sargent did a very good job.

I wouldnt mind if the hawks went to a pistol.

I think it is more mixing it up.
On Friday when we were pinned deep, Nebraska fully expected us to run and try and get some breathing room. Would of been the perfect time to line up in a heavy power I package and throw it. We weren't and didn't have success running it, because everyone knew we were going to.
The odds are just as good. If it fails you throw it away and you are in the same situation as you were when they knew you were going to run anyway 2&10.
I also thought we should of went for it on that one 4th down instead of a pooch punt.
We were doing pretty well and I think we would have gotten it.
Basically just saying our run game is pretty predictable. Or the timing of it is anyway.

Improve the interior line. Mix in some hat on hat. Keep the fb.

It feels like oline recruiting has ticked up last couple years ( it had fell off under GD). If Wirfs and/or Jackson return we could see a very good overall oline.

Pass protection was much better from Wisc thru nebby. Need great guards for zone to work great.

I think we'll see a vast improvement in the run game next year. No facts to back that up, I just think it'll be a focus starting with oline. Need key guys to stay healthy and be about 7 deep....that gets very doable if guys return.

And yet when BF was run-game coordinator in 2016 (year before he took over as OC), Hawks had 2x1000yd rushers, and they averaged 5.0 and 6.4 ypc, respectively (2016 season stats). And that was with absolutely no passing game, allowing teams to load up on the run. What the hell happened?

I think it is time for Iowa to do away with fullbacks. That is, with the typical walk-on athletes they play at that position who essentially serve as small, mobile guards. I just don't think you can afford to put someone in the backfield who is not some sort of threat with the ball in this day and age.

Iowa has scads of TEs who can block, but who can also serve as a big-body receiving target with a large catch radius. If the coaches can get a walk-on to be a serviceable fullback, certainly they can coach one of their scholarship TEs to fulfill that same role (SF does this with Kittle to create mismatches). Next year, maybe that should be Beyer? They will have LaPorta, Miamen, Yelverton, Lachey, and Theo Johnson to man the other TE positions.

I think they other thing they need to do is use the short-passing game to supplement the run game. They have tried that in the past few years, but frankly that is not Stanley's strong-suit. He is better off sitting in the pocket and loading up the cannon. I know many would like to see Iowa play a mobile QB, and I am not opposed. But as one of the few remaining teams that is willing to utilize a pocket passer, Iowa can take advantage of a market inefficiency and get a REALLY good player back there. But that QB has to be able to deliver quickly and accurately in the short-passing game for Iowa to be able to become "Patriots Lite."

I'm not sure what the issue is frankly. I'm not sure it's that though. I think GOOD fullbacks ones that can also catch check downs along with being battering rams are still worth their weight in gold. I think it's more along the lines of playcalling. Being predictable by formations during obvious running downs just hamper our chances. You have to be creative with it and QBs have to be able to check out of things when the numbers aren't on your side. I think our guards really struggled this year as well. When you add it all up it is what it is..

Ummmm no.
We tried the short passing with GD.
What we need to be a Patriots light is a qb qb who can throw short and longer and who can throw on the move. We did start using some roll outs later in the year however.
Then we need Brian to play rock paper scissors with..... just about anyone. Meaning at a given down and distance if the O lines up in this formation, what play do you think is coming?
I expect a bunch will change next year. I'm not sure we have had this many weapons in a very long time. They all can improve and are expected to improve, but for the first time in a long time, you really can't say, we need some rb's or we need some wr's. We need to recruit to keep the pipeline flowing however!!
What is exciting to me is, if we start scoring points, people are going to have to throw to keep up and we have a couple in our defensive backfield who will be playing on Sundays. (Again recruit and keep it going) We also have a lb group that played well and got a ton of experience.
Our DL should feast next year. (That's what makes OSU that way, is you have to beat the entire front 7)
When the pieces start coming together, look out.
