- Should Hyde return punts next year?

I'm not sure he would be willing to call for a fair catch often enough.

JK.

He looked really good back there; however, off the top of my head, I think our coaches have generally preferred offensive players to be our return guys. Who was the last defensive back to return punts for us? Since '07, it has been Sandeman, Chaney, DJK, Brodell, and Wegher, I think.

NO. We will have other guys with open field skills and his position isn't one with lots of depth. I say NO

What position that generally fields quality punt returners are we certain will have quality depth next year? PRs are usually RBs, WRs, and DBs. We rarely have speedy depth at RB, WR is probably our biggest question mark next year, and you are right, DB isn't a spot where we have great depth either; however, of those three spots, I think we have the most returning at DB. Here are guys that I could see returning punts next year:

Micah Hyde
DeAndre Johnson
Keenan Davis
Jordan Cotton
Some other unknown commodity.

I think Hyde will get a serious look at it. He will get a rest after returns because then the offense is on the field unless he takes it back. Good idea with him as a returner. And with Bernstine, Castillo, Lowe, etc. they have more depth than people realize at CB.

2nd time he has returned an interception when he should have been down. Some great instinct for finding open space.

I say yes to OP's question as it will help greatly with field position.

We had Sash return a punt or two last year, and Spievey too. But the last DB that I remember who was a regular punt returner was Jovon Johnson, and that was because Ed Hinkel got hurt.

I just wish Prater would change his name to Jekyll. It would be choice to have Jekyll and Hyde as our CBs. :p

If Campbell can gain the trust of the coaches early, I look for him to get a chance to be a specialist.

Yes He should return punt of kick-offs. He very clearly has the skills. He have some depth at CB, especially if Prater comes back. You are flat out crazy if don't think we have some depth at CB if Prater comes back.

Kirk said something about that in the postgame; that he should be playing offense but they don't have enough guys on defense, or maybe returning and they'd look at trying to get him involved there.

i think the better idea would be have that defensive unit do the blocking on the return team.

by the way, who was that #4? he looked like he could have been playing all year....
