The Iowa Football Program starts it 134th Season if the framed poster of players with leather helmets on my den wall is correct. The program is 15 wins from the 700 mark and I hope to be here during the 2024 season to when that 700th win might come. The period between 1963 and 1979 really impacted the record. There was another period in the 30's and 40's that didn't help the record, but never 17 years without a winning record. Part of the blame was on the AD and the other was the administrations attitude toward athletics. Another was the Big Ten limitations on scholarships and eligibility requirements versus what other conferences were permitted to do. It's water over the dam now.

Now college football is in another era. Name In Likeness (NIL) along with the lenient transfer rules are and have already changed the direction college football is on. Conference realignment adds another dimension. I think an honest person looking at the big picture has to wonder if programs like Iowa can be competitive in the future. People look at the media money and it looks rosy if your an SEC or B1G conference member. But can the Iowa NIL effort compete with the programs that are at Universities with twice the size of the Iowa alumni base? Can Iowa attract and keep a head coach that can do well? There is certainly a lot of ifs to be answered in the next three years. I'm fearful that sustaining a winning program will be increasingly difficult for many programs.
