Search Committee

I hope that we do not go the consulting company route again while conducting this search. It is my hope that Barta asks several former players to act as a special committee to assist him with the interviews and search.

Any thoughts?

Bad idea.

I have no problem with a 3rd party intermeidary type search firm being involved to handle the contacting and maintaining the faccade of denial on both Iowa and candidates part when asked about contact...that is pretty much standard these days.

I do not want said firm to be screening potential candidates.
As far as an unpaid search committee of interested insiders? Ok as a sounding board on a final group of candidates...but no binding up or down...if Gary finds the guy, he is free to hire with or without the smell test with this crew.,

Do you guys propose hiring a consulting firm as we did last time? There is nothing like having people who know nothing about the culture at the University of Iowa and the history of the Iowa basketball program to make a hiring recommendation.

Might I also add that if we had solely trusted our AD to make a hiring decision back in 1998, Terry Allen might have been our football coach. All I am suggesting is some influence from former players during the process.

That is a fact. If not for Marv Cook and the "hated" Ann Rhodes that dumb*ss Bowlsby would have gotten away with it.

Search firms do not "make hiring recommendations" nor hiring decisions. They handle the mechanics of the process and "matchmake" potential candidates in private. Barta said he expected he'd use one again. He did not to my knowledge mention a "search committee" and thank goodness for that.

I understand the Terry Allen point. Nonetheless, empowering the AD is the way to go, it's what the guy is paid for.

Billso-

I understand the advantages of using a consulting firm for purposes of them playing matchmaker, etc. I also think they are useful for having plausible deniability so an athletic director can say "We never interviewed him" in the event they put a feeler out there and did not receive any mutual interest.

However, other than the usefulness that they provide for plausible deniability, what value do they add to a university that hires such a firm?

Go Hawks!
