Gopher fan here. . I graduated from Univ of Minnesota, but live in Iowa so I have no choice but to listen to the Hawkeye news. Great year btw.
I stopped by the board a few times last year and revealed in your pain. It was great to see the Hawkeye fan base bicker about program, the fire Ferentz noise and the complaints about your recruiting. While your recruiting classes didn’t rank well with the pundits (who by the way, no nothing about recruiting), I thought you had a few really talented classes in 2014 and 2015. The 2016 class has some really impressive kids on defense. That’s my preamble; I’ll get to my point…
One thing I never question is the Hawkeyes’ staff when it relates to offensive linemen. Last year I watched these Hawkeye boards sing doom and gloom about the walk-on OTs (Boettger and Boone Myers), and also questioned the heart of Welsh (who I recall took time to manage a family issue) and there was even a question as to whether Walsh was talented. Turns out the Hawkeye coaches coached up the walk-ons and turned them into a couple good players. Another walk-on emerged (Croston) and may be better than the other two. All three look good to me. Throw in the freshman (Daniels) and you all have good talent returning. That’s before you consider: Render, Paulsons, Newborg, etc.
Now, back to Sean Foster. I felt great joy when the Gophers beat the Hawks with his initial recruitment. Then, I began to question why a Hawkeye legacy didn’t get offered by the Hawkeyes. I watched some game film and noticed he dominated…against kids much smaller than him. Then, I saw a film of him working out behind his house. He’s a huge kid (6’8, 300) What I saw was kid that didn’t look athletic, he looked stiff, heavy footed, slow…he plodded. My summation was he didn’t look like a Hawkeye tackle. He’s got the size, but appears to be too tall and doesn’t move well enough to play guard and not nimble/athletic enough to play tackle. All that said, something is up. My guess is the Hawkeye coaches know the deal and have passed for the same reasons that Minnesota coaches passed on Meeker, Heinrich and Bright.
Be thankful for what you have now. If you guys get Farniok...God help us all.
The Gophers lost a “4-Star” and I’m not crying.
