I used to think the same way. Kind of enjoyed his takes. But something always bugged me...and it dawned upon me that Deace talks about athletic competition like somebody who hasn't been involved in it. He's always trying to assign a bunch of extraneous crap to a contest, when in reality once the ball is kicked off, none of it really matters. All that matters is focus, talent, and execution. If you're thinking about the stuff that Deace claims athletes are thinking about, then you're doomed. You're in the moment on the field or you're toast. Period. I played football. My only concern on the field was executing in the moment.

I won't even get into his irrational hatred of gay folk or other bizarre fundamentalist theocratic leanings, which are to say the least disturbing to any even minimally enlightened human being.
