Scott Drew is an interesting prospect

History suggests it's not easy to get it done at Baylor, but he's doing a pretty good job there. Certainly has the athletes. Just beat Texas in Austin this afternoon, and gave KU a run for their money recently IIRC.

You'd have to think Baylor won't be this Indiana native's last stop. I wouldn't be surprised to see him move up in the next year or two.

Whenever it is that the next opening occurs at Iowa, he might be an appealing candidate. The thing is, we haven't done so well with Indiana guys over the last decade or so.

I suggested this on HR a couple of weeks ago. More than one person responded that he is crooked. One poster said that he talked to an AAU coach in TX who said that Drew is the dirtiest coach he's dealt with.

Everyone is crooked except for Iowa. That's not just an answer now...its always that way, right? Someone else wins while we cannot, they have to be crooked ;)

Your post reminded me of something I had forgotten--Baylor hired the coach of John Wall's summer team as a DBO last summer, and most thought that meant Wall would follow. He obviously didn't.

The new NCAA rule prohibiting the hiring of anyone associated with a recruit was not in effect at the time. I don't know if that means Drew is "dirty" or not. Maybe they thought the guy was a good hire, and just paid him market value for that position.

If Scott is dirty, he sure didn't take after his father.

I always get a chuckle out of Iowa fans who are quick to accuse others of being crooked fail to remember Ed Martin's association with the Raveling regime or the whole stank that came from landing Tyler Smith.

It is quite possibly the most embarrassing part of this fan base. However, I cannot stand the style that Baylor plays, it is basically the same as ISU under Morgan.

Did you know that Drew graduated from Butler, and spent two season as a graduate assistant for the Bulldogs?

That and the fact that he spent much of his life in Indiana makes me NOT want him as the coach of Iowa. Please God, let our next hire be someone NOT from Indiana.

I dont care where he graduated from, I care about what he can do as a coach, and if his record demostrates that he can coach at a high level in high level competition, if he can and has built a program from scratch, and that he can communicate with his players, potential recruits and can get the fans believing and excited too.

why would he want to leave baylor for iowa. In my opinion he has the better job. he is in Texas so has a nice choice of athletes and players to chose from. He is in the Big 12 so he is in the same level. I dont see us as a step up for him.

Actually, Jon, Scott Drew is crooked.

Soren Petro is on Sports Radio 810 in KC. He is a very responsible sportstalk radio personality. He has said on the air more than once that Drew is the least-liked coach in the B12 and it is because the other coaches think he is crooked.

I realize that doesn't mean he is crooked, but here are a few nuggets that he has used to support that. The word amongst those in the know is that Baylor preaches about being a religious school and having morals and then is unethical in how they run their current basketball program. They negative recruit big-time, but they are also dirty. Additionally, people in the know also understand that Homer Drew ran his program at Valpo the same way.

I believe 100% that if this really weren't the case Petro would not have made a point to talk about this on the air multiple times over the last year. He doesn't go out on a crusade against Drew, he just brings it up from time to time when it merits being mentioned due to the context of the conversation. This isn't the only place I have heard this, but I use it as an example of something other than a bunch of people talking around the water cooler.

Is every coach dirty except those at Iowa? No. Is Scott Drew? Pretty much.

Help me pez.

What is the whole stank that came with landing Tyler Smith? I'm fairly well informed, but I don't recall anything like a stank?

You make a great point and it worries me. I don't think there are many programs in major conferences that in worse shape than Iowa currently is. I have seen other boards that have talked about Bruce Pearl but why would he leave Tenn to come to Iowa. At this point, I don't think we will be able to land a successful coach from a major conference. It's been over a decade since we have had a respectable bball program. We will be looking at prospects from mid majors, unless we were to hire an assistant.

if we did fire lick then it would be nice to get a young name that will hopefully rise here and then leave for a better job. I am fine with this because if he did leave for a better job then that means that he did a great job here. Someone young like the new Memphis coach would be nice. I think he is like 34 or 35. Someone who can go all out and get to know the people that we need to know. I have been pretty impressed with Miller at AZ. he wasnt left with much but he is doing a good job.

So then you would prefer the current Iowa style to that style?

Yes, I think that Butler is/was a really fun team to watch. The problem is that Lick has assembled the slowest guards in the Big Ten and undersized big men which is a terrible mix. If you fix the recruiting issues, this style of ball can be fun. Baylor plays street ball for 40 minutes which resembles most SEC games which are damn near impossible to watch. Do not confuse this post as support for Lick in any way.

Stank may of been overstated and just my opinion, but shenanigans were going on in the Smith recruiting saga at Tennessee the first go round before he ended up at Iowa.
