Scott Dochterman on Pearl

Clipped this from the Gazette's online chat earlier this evening:

Scott Dochterman: Pearl is not interested, I've heard from a reporter who covers UT. The UT admin isn't even worried at this point

This really shouldn't be a shock to anybody. Iowa needs to get the best assistant coach in the country IMO. A guy that is the #1 recruiter for his program with tons of connections. Iowa needs a huge talent upgrade and they never were going to get Pearl anyway so IMO go for the next best thing.

but then later they said money talks and anyone would listen for 3 million a year

No offense to Doc or to the UT reporter, but only Bruce Pearl knows what's in his heart.

He may be interested. He may not be. As Tennessee prepares for the tournament this weekend, there's no way he can come out and say what he'd like to do either way. Who knows? Perhaps there has been some back-channel communication.

I'm sure he knows whether Iowa is interested and he can let that ride for the next couple of weeks while he focuses on other matters.

I think most people around here realize this. Rarely can we speculate though about something like this. If you think about how awful our program is, it is depressing. So we might as well live in "dream world" for a few days until Barta hires a guy we've never heard of to lead us into the future, right?

Just as long as Bruce, or Bruce's agent tells Barta know, then I am fine with it. Until then, fire away Gary!

PS: Reports last year had Memphis offering Pearl $3.25 mil per year. Which is a better basketball job, Iowa or Memphis?

Seems about as likely as Pearl coming, so not really sure where you're going with that. Same questions would arise, why would he choose Iowa?

sure they will....not saying they will take it but anyone not at a top tier program will listen

Compared to Iowa and ISU bball, Tenn is a top tier program. Pearl is also bringing in 5 star talent to his class next year. Guys that wouldn't leave the area to follow him to Iowa. He isn't leaving Tenn. So what next? I think there are some good mid major coaches but Hawk fans would be ****** it seems if that happened. Get a really big name assistant coach. You don't have to pay him 3 mil a year and instead you can use the extra money to get really good assistant coaches under him

Iowa has the better conference. Otherwise it is Memphis in a landslide. Play in an NBA stadium that is always full attendance wise. Much better recent (20 years) history

You don't think Iowa can hire away one of Izzo's top assistants? Just throwing stuff out there but I think an assistant with tons of recruiting ties would be a great hire.

See shady Frank Martin. Guy can recruit and that's 90% of the battle in college bball

Noodles?

haha...j/k

You wouldn't take a 25% raise? or even listen to it?

Not in this situation. Not when I can probably get 3 million from Tennessee in a couple years if I keep winning like I have been and other schools keep coming after me. See Kirk Ferentz
