Schwartz: Ten Sentences – Hawkeye Stages of Grief Edition

To be honest, I have not missed sports. I have not watched any of the NHL, NBA (Not that I ever did), or MLB.
I guess as I grow older, different things are more important. Will I miss Iowa football? sure, but I wont go through 5 stages of grief. After all, they are just games.

Im more concerned about my daughter who is at college for her first year and am afraid they will shut down again and she has to come home. Im more concerned about me going back to school to teach with a severe lack of resources to make this work.

But, hey, to each their own.

You can reach out to Dave on Twitter and ask. If you don't have Twitter, I'm sure you can track him down.

To equate it to losing family is as ridiculous as the stealth racism around here. He wrote it...you posted it. I get that some are really upset about no football and some grace could be used, but seriously losing family? It's one of those comments people say that don't really mean what they say, but for those who have lost someone, particularly recently, it's too much. No, I don't tweet, but I've made a ton on twitter stock during this time.

I will miss hawkeye football, certainly. But not enough to spoil my life or mood. If I need a hawkeye football fix I can always watch some great games on you tube. As a matter of fact I never get tired of watching the the hawks beat Nebby 6 of the last 7 and even the 2014 game is pretty entertaining until those two late punt returns.

And I can survive on many replays of Iowa beating Iowa State etc etc. I can do those at my own leisure and get more stuff done around the house this late summer and fall.

This article may describe the mental process experienced by some players, parents, coaches & sports writers, but I don't think it describes the emotions of most die-hard Hawk fans. I've been attending Iowa games for 35 years and have season tickets, and fall Saturdays are amazing bonding times with friends and family. But really, in the big picture of life, it's not that big of a deal. It's also not like the entire season is lost -- there's still a good chance the BTen will happen in early 2021. It's just a matter of postponed gratification -- something that perhaps gets easier with age.

As tough as not having football this fall will be it's not comparable to the loss of life there's no doubt about that. We change and adapt pretty fast. After the first few weeks we'll have found other stuff to do with our time on Saturdays. Nobody gets as geeked out over it as I do on gamedays. It'll be weird as all get out for sure. Especially with other games going on. That'll just keep me pissed off probably. But there's no need to do welfare checks on me I'll be aight.
