Schwartz: Hawkeye New Year’s Resolutions

I admit, i skimmed the article. But it looks like an apologists dream.
Yay, we resigned and average coach for money that will be on par with his mediocrity by the year 2020.
What a great job you did Barta.

That article pissed me off. We missed our opportunity. Yes, I was thrilled to watch Iowa go 12-0. That was exciting. But the ass kicking we took in the Rose Bowl kind of diminished that thrill. Were we beneficiaries of an easy schedule? looks like it. When we played a team with real talent, what happened?

This season was more of the same. Lose one or 2 games we shouldnt, get better as the season goes on, win 8 games and go to Florida.

I want to change that. Lets make 10 wins the norm. Let recruits talk to other schools. Be confident in our ability to attract high level recruits and after they shop around they will still sign with us. Because of the family atmosphere.

Im sick and tired of 8 wins. Yeah, its better than the 70s. But its not a standard we should be reaching for.

You certainly entitled to feel how you like as a fan. They're your expectations and they can be whatever you want them to be.

I will ask this question to put into context what expectations are realistic.

How many teams in the country and in the Big Ten have averaged 10 wins a season for the last decade?

He got ya with that one Mo

Consistent 8 win seasons would be a huge upgrade to what we have. 10 wins is just greedy.

most wins the past decade:

1. Boise St. 113 wins
2. Ohio St. 110
3. Alabama 107
4. Oregon 106
5. LSU 103
6. Oklahoma 101
7. TCU 100
8. USC 99
9. Wisconsin 98
10. Virginia Tech 96

The program we are compared to most often averaged 9.8 wins over the last decade.

I will modify my original statement. I want 9.8 wins a season. :)

EDIT: I took this info from an article before the 2015 season.

Wisconsin can do ti, but we cannot? Why? What is the difference? And Wisconsin has done it with 3 different head coaches.

I stand by my wish.

I couldnt edit for some reason.

The above win totals were taken from an article dayted 8-19-2015. So the numbers have changed. But Wisconsins average is similar.

Stanford was the first team we played with 'real talent', lol....Yeah, they were soooo talented they got smoked by the NW team we ran out of the stadium. We just didn't play well, it happens, quit crying and making ignorant statements.
YOU want to change that, lol....Well, I suggest you either get into college administration, become a coach, or put some pads on or become a HUGE donor, or YOU aren't going to do diddly squat. Get a life, you whiny, self-absorbed grazer. It's a new year, try to appreciate some things and find IMPORTANT things to get worked up about.........

Wow. Name call much? I guess maybe you should heed your own advice.

Your statements ring true of the apologists. You enjoy your 7 win seasons. Losing to teams like Iowa State and skating by power houses like UNI.

Why try and be the best you can be, when you can be mediocre?

At least our coaches salary will start falling back to the pack.

I love how you 'crazies' throw the word 'apologist' around frequently. Most of you apparently don't understand it's meaning. There is no 'controversy' to defend, so someone calling out the self-absorbed who attempt to 'create' controversy, doesn't make one an apologist. You 'crazies' actually believe you are the 'average' fan or even the majority....you're not. You're not even close. You're just part of the small, small percentage of twits who think the world revolves around them and their 'feelings' and are so delusional you think that coming on a free message board 'anonymously' and whining and blaming is somehow contributing to or influencing something. It's not. You and your brethren just chase off most that want to get some inside info, learn something, or just talk some football about their favorite team. Oh, and what was my advice that I need to heed? And what did I 'apologize' about? I just made a CLEAR case that you're a self-absorbed idiot who clearly has no clue what they are talking about...(and typical of your 'kind' who doesn't have the attention span to actually read something to be able to make an 'informed' opinion about what it said, just how it made you 'feel'..waaa.)

3. Hawkeye Athletics, resolve to keep up the good work on the academics. For several years, Iowa athletes have ranked at the top of the Big Ten in academic performance. I know some people roll their eyes at that, but that’s a major accomplishment that deserves recognition.
This was the most important part of his article, but will mean pretty much nothing to the crazy grazers on this site. All these 100's of student athletes come here every year and 'work' their way through college to get that degree. Other students work their way through by waiting tables, etc... but these student athletes trade their 'labor' for that degree, as only a couple a year will ever earn a penny playing sports after they leave. The majority of us who are intelligent and not the self-absorbed, understand educating these kids and developing them to be future leaders is the most important thing Luckily the athletes, most of the real 'fans', the administration, coaches, major donors, etc..do understand that or the nugatory 'wannabe's would ruin in it in a short time.....

So academics is your main concern. Good for you. That is why they are called student-athletes.
I will refer back to a program that we are compared to, Wisconsin.
And here is a headline "Wisconsin Football Tops The Country in Academic Progress Rate"

According to NCAA.com, the Academic Progress Rate, or APR, “holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.”

So it seems the one program that is most similar to us, not only has success on the football field, it has success in the classroom.

But that is too much for fans like you to aspire too.

Long Live Mediocrity!
