Schwartz: Can Hawkeyes Take A Punch?

That's a good article. I think those close losses revolved around 2 things.
1. We couldn't run the ball to salt away a close game when we needed to. That's on the OL/OL coaches. This fact also had our defense on the field too much and made it difficult for them to get stops when we had to have them.
2. BF's inability to adapt the game plan when it was needed. Or maybe he was too inexperienced to do it well enough. Good coaches figure out what's working and adapt to exploit it. He could get better at this as time goes by.

The article's author conveniently forgot about the Iowa State game this season because it did not fit his story line. That game was close in 4Q but the defense kept making key stops and the offense scored late in the 4th to make the final margin by 10.

Fact is Iowa was 2-4 in games this year that were close in the 4Q and 6-0 in blow out wins.

That suggests to me that Iowa was really a 9-3 team that was a little unlucky and finished 8-4.

What? Iowa state was close as it gets....6-3 late in the 4th and 3rd and 10 on our own 19. Stanley converted to hock and then Smith on a great late drive.

Same thing against Minnesota....31-24 in the 3rd and 41-31 in the 4th and he led them to touchdowns both times.

I think the flaw this year was the inability of the Defense to get late stops

Iowa found 4 ways to lose 4 games. They only had to push it to beat 1 team And that was one of the weakest defenses in the league.

this team lacks the heart of a winner.

Wisconsin and NW are the 2 games they should not have lost. Purdue was really down to the last team to have the ball wins game and Penn State was just a weird game for both teams. But, Wiscy and NW were give away games in my opinion.

I also agree with others about the ISU game. That game was close. Minnesota on the other hand never felt close despite the score at one point in the second half.

I think Iowa wins on Jan. 1.

Why we lost 4 games:

Wisconsin: Two special teams fumbles, Red Zone performance, Stanley couldn't make plays in the fourth quarter.
Penn State: Stanley resembled a mediocre high school QB...that is all.
Purdue: Defensive game plan, Stanley bonehead throws, untimely officiating decisions.
NW: Worst offensive game plan in history of football, two RB fumbles late.

This team could have run the table. Stanley only had his "great performances" against the mediocre teams on the schedule...that's clear to me. If Stanley plays outstanding in any of the above games, it's a win...any of them and all of them.

Brohm certainly realized that. And he deserves kudos for passing on a makable 47 yard FG and going for it on 4th and 2. One of many ways he outcoached Kirk that day.

I think the title of this post should be “Can Brian Ferentz” adapt a game plan on the fly”.

If I recall it has been coaching issues that have lead us to most of our defeats.

What are the top five "out-coached" the other team in the last few years for Kirk and staff?

This is a tough and resident team. They proved that in the final game of the season by finishing things out with a game winning field goal drive. They have gained a lot of valuable experience this season, and with that experience they will have a huge advantage in close games going forward (if opponents can somehow mange to keep it close).
