School Colors are Black and OLD GOLD, not YELLOW.

The thread soliciting opinions on throwback uni's got me thinking. Apparently the majority of fans don't want to ever move away from the Pittsburgh Steelers copy-cat uni's because they are traditional or people associate us with a winning program or because ...
I say Yada, Yada, Yada. They aren't even our actual school colors. It is Black and THIS:

We are frauds by wearing black and YELLOW! Does anyone know when it began?
What other traditional power based their uni's on a pro team's design. Alabama? Florida? USC? Michigan? Texas? I can't think of one.

I say keep the Tiger Hawk but go back to our true colors. A black helmet with an OLD GOLD Tiger Hawk. Or an OLD GOLD helmet with a black Tiger Hawk? And while we are at it, why not drop the stripe from the helmet and go with a matte finish for the black helmet and a metallic finish if OLD GOLD.
Black Home Jersey's with Old Gold pants. No stripe.
Black pants with no stripe for the white road uni's. Black numbers outlined in OLD GOLD or vice versa. Maybe lose all the stripes? A leaner meaner look?

It would be a merchandising bonanza for the University. I for one would not want to be the last one in Hawkeye Nation sporting a Black and YELLOW foam finger or a Black and YELLOW "WELCOME" mat while everyone else is doing the OLD GOLD thing.;)

The Pittsburgh Steelers look may have been a brilliant move by Hayden, or it may have been gimmicky. Regardless, we established a winning program long ago. So how about a little bit of compromise? Keep the Tiger Hawk but change the color scheme. Keep some of the 30 year "tradition", but isn't it time to move forward? Or back if you will?

Jesus, the throwbacks yesterday were cool, but they've got everyone on the uniform revamp kick. Give it a rest, the uni's aren't changing (this isn't a personal thing, I've just been seeing stuff like this all day).

No offense taken. It has either been uni's or how unfair it is that we are ranked behind such and such.:) So it could be a dead heat as to which topic is more irrelevant.

Still I would like to know when we started using Black and YELLOW. Were the real 1958 uni's that yellow? Just wondering.

if our school colors were as you say..... then why, in many other uniform designs before hayden's steeler's option, did they use black and yellow? My sole example is yesterday- we "threwback" to the most successful era of hawkeye history. Keep it where it is (color scheme & uniform type). I think that they will keep the same uni's. just like hayden's change and its acceptance- i believe that if anyone could change the uni's it would be kirk, because of his successes here at Iowa- but it is not his M.O. to shake foundations.

It was Old Gold back in Kinnick's day. And I think if anyone were to change the unis, it would be the next coach. Doesn't mean they'd actually get it done. But Kirk won't change them, bet your bottom dollar on that.

From the pics I've seen, yes the 58 unis were that yellow, so we have 50+ years of yellow-gold. That's a lot of tradition to flush.

Yes, our official colors are black and old gold (color of the Old Capital Dome?). That is a fact that no one can deny. But all uniforms have been black and yellow for a VERY long time. If yellow was good enough for Hayden Fry, Kirk Ferentz, Lute Olsen and Tom Davis, though, its good enough for me.

If we went back to old gold we would look too much like Purdue. I wouldn't care for that. Its been black and yellow the entire time I (and the overwhelming majority of Hawkeye fans) have been alive, so I am good with it.

I'd call Purdue's "gold" brown ... nobody's talking about going that far are you?

Well, I'd call what PU wears now "pale gold", almost tan (looks crappy IMHO). True old gold like they used to wear is more brownish. If you run across any PU pics from the 80s or earlier you'll see what I mean. Missouri is more the true old gold also. For me, maintaining distinction from PU and MU makes it worth sticking with the yellow gold, especially since we've been using it since the 50s at least.

Wearing the Yellow Gold that they wear has nothing to do with the steelers, they have been wearing it since the mid 50's get over it. And actually if you look up the uniforms history of the Steelers and Hawkeyes you will see that the steelers throwbacks that they sometimes wear are almost Identical to the throwbacks that Iowa just wore, but Evy's teams were wearing that uniform design BEFORE the steelers were. So who is copying who?

Besides The BigTen already has an Old Gold and Black team and thats Purdue, it would get awfully confusing when we play them with all that old gold and black on the field.

The colors we have now should be the official school colors, Old Gold hasnt been used for half a century...

Officially yes, but we are now Yellow. Get over it. Purdue is in our conference and uses the gold. Not a good idea to use the exact colors of someone in our conference who we would play every year.

it is gold, just not old gold. It is not yellow.
Correct. I've heard that Evy introduced it himself and he called it "new gold". I call it Bright Gold.

All the "gold" on the '58 throwback unis matched nearly perfectly with the gold that is used in the endzones - which is the official school-sanctioned shade of gold. It looked good to me. Had a bit of a bright-but-dirty look to it.

The shade of gold that is currently used on the helmet (stripe & tigerhawk) has that same slightly darker shade to it. Darker, in fact, than what is currently used on the pants, which are more yellowish. I'd like to see them make the pants that darker shade of gold. Make it match please.

I do not like YELLOW, and will not by any Iowa merchandise that uses YELLOW.

Agreed. If you Google "1978 iowa hawkeyes football" and choose Images, you'll see in the first row a "new gold/bright gold" helmet. Fry changed the design but not the color. In the 3rd row you'll see a 1946-1950 era helmet in traditional Old Gold. Yellow is not an authentic Iowa color although sadly the basketball uniforms have come very close.

I feel dumber for reading this thread, and sad for the time you will all never get back in your lives. please argue about something intelligent from now on.

Some of us are uniform geeks. Some of us are obsessed with getting a Tiger Hawk on the water tower. Just the way it is...
