Scholarship Question

I believe teams can have 12 on scholarship at one time.

With this limit what would be the "perfect" makeup of guards vs bigs? Also, where do next year's returning scholarship players/recruits fit in your perfect makeup?

My thoughts would be as follows:

Perfect Makeup

Point Guards - 2

Shooting Guards - 3 with 1 being a combo Point/2

Small Forwards - 4 with 1 being a combo 2/SF and 1 being a combo SF/PF

Power Forwards/Centers - 4 with 2 being combo 4/5 and 2 true 5's
(Question here though - would Coach prefer 4 combos w/ no true 5?)

Current/Recruits

Point Guards - Payne (only true point guard)

Two Guards - Gatens (combo 2/3?), Brust (combo 2/3?), Marble (combo 1/2?)

Small Forwards - May (combo 2/3?), Fuller (4)

Power Forwards - Cole (4/5), Cougill (4), Brommer (5), Archie (4/5?), Larson (4), McCabe(?)

Are we currently a bit heavy at the 4/5??

I think we all agree another true point guard would be the best use of Tucker's scholly but I am a bit concerned about using it on anything other than a juco/transfer (does anyone really think we could get a player to transfer in?). If it was used on an incoming freshman it would make the 2010/11 recruiting class a bit heavy for the future unless a player would be redshirted. With the extra player at the 4/5 is it possible McCabe redshirts moving the scholarship out a year and evening the classes?

Edit: Added 13th scholarship

Kirkwood's Kaylon Williams may be worth a look. He's averaging just about 12 points and 7 assists per game, and is shooting 38% from 3-point range. He's very athletic, and could be a very effective penetrator for us. He also brings more size (6'3" as opposed to Cully's 6'0"), and he's pretty fun to watch. He's also a Cedar Rapids product, so he probably would have some interest in playing for the Hawks if he were given the opportunity.

Do you think that Cully and Kaylon would mesh well? As point guards go, I would say that this is Cully's team. Do you think Cully would be humble enough to step into a supporting role if Kaylon came aboard? Do you think Kaylon would be able to submit to being Cully's back-up? Both seem like alpha dogs to me, and I could see them bumping heads.

I was just looking at his skills. But I also envisioned a pretty even amount of playing time, just about 50-50 in PT, depending on the kind of night they're having and what the situation calls for. I don't know about Kaylon, but I think Cully is a pretty coachable player, though also very competitive. They could both push each other to new heights, and if they can put any potential rifts aside, they could be a deadly combo at the point, and I think Kaylon could also take some minutes at SG.

Well, coach wants the players to be humble not confidant and Cully would want to please the coach.
