Saw Kyle Meyer play Friday night

Kyle Meyer's HS team played about a mile form my house Friday night, so I caught the game. I came away VERY impressed by his skills... especially his ball handling and passing ability. His ability to take the ball down low and kick it back out will be exciting to see. I think minutes may be hard to come by for him next year due to depth, but I think we'll be pleasantly surprised by his ability to contribute next year.

The kid can handle the ball very well and can shoot the ball from pretty much anywhere on the court. He has quick hands and is also fast for a big man. He regularly followed the other teams guards down the court trying to make steals, and kept with them no problem.

If I had to compare him to another player from this years' team, it would be Aaron White. Some see him as a center, but I definitely see him as a PF, and wouldn't be at all surprised if he could play a very tall 3.

The only possible area for concern (and I don't think it will be a problem at all once he gets to campus) is his energy level, as he looked bored and frustrated at times. That being said, I think that had more to do with the fact that there wasn't any talent on the court anywhere near his level. This is most likely why he shines in AAU where the talent level is much higher.

When he got the ball, he would immediately get double and triple teamed, and the refs were pretty much letting him get hacked on all night. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what Adam Woodbury sees every night, too. You could sense his frustration, but he dealt with it and pretty much looked like a man against boys.

All in all, I think Fran got another good one.

Awesome post!

Everyone is talking about the lineup next year with Woodbury, McCabe, Basabe, and White. But Meyer may have something to say about that. I think he comes in as a true freshman better than McCabe and White which is exciting. Iowa is going to have some awesome talent under the basket for the next few years, which is something we have not had for a long time.

Solid report....thanks!

I presume he plays in more of a suburban league? What I really like about him is his summer AAU experience on the Celtics, which is full of top athletes. So,he will not be shocked by the next level of athlete when he gets to the Big Ten. Adjusting to the quickness might not be so much of a transition for him.

Very glad to hear about his versatility and athleticism. No offense to Seth Gorney, but we need a different kind of athlete, and it sounds like Kyle is not similar to Seth.

We have seen how Fran can evaluate talent and spot underrated recruits like Melsahn,Bryce and Aaron White,so I am hoping we landed another unsung gem in Kyle. Keep the updates coming...thanks again!

I agree with most of this but I still do not get the man-crush you have for Mel! McCabe and White are both better than Mel!

I have seen Meyer twice in person and agree with the comments here, except I can't see him at the 3 position. In the 2 games I saw, he had the ball stolen from him several times when he tried to drive from the perimeter to the basket.

Mel came in last year and made the Big Ten all-frosh team. So, if Meyer comes in as a frosh as good as White or Mel did as frosh...that is good.

I wish fans would cut Mel some slack. This is a TEAM,with lots of contributors. Maybe the next game will be Mel's turn to shine.

Where are you getting me having a man crush on Mel? About the only thing I have said about him is that I think he will do much better with a true center in the lineup.

I went back and re-read your post, and I was wrong. Mea-cupa! (Have the Latin scollars check my spelling!)

We are going to have some very skilled bigs in the near future. White, McCabe, Meyer all seem to have very versatile face-up games.

You missed the "l" in "culpa".

Gatens and May also made the all B1G Frosh team. A lot of times that just means you play on a crappy team where you have to play too much. Hawks will really be back when the only freshmen playing that much will also be on the All-Confernence team as well.

In the game I saw, other than the center who was maybe 6'4", the rest of the other team were the size of most point guards... all fairly quick. When he drove to the hoop, it was as if he was driving against at least 2 point guards all the time.

They did manage to get a couple away from him, but he did well for the most part. Most of the time he would dump it off when they doubled on him, but I could sense his frustration of not being able to play his normal game and he drove a couple times when maybe he should have dumped it off. When he plays against taller players (and isn't double and triple teamed by point guards :)), I don't think he'll have this problem.

He definitely has some development left to do, but I think the ability is there for sure.

Any idea what Kyle's line was?

Not sure of his line. Had a bunch of boards. He didn't have as many points as you would think for somebody who dominates the other team as much as he did... he may have had 0 but not sure.

However, this is mostly because they really didn't take advantage of his height advantage. The times they got it to him down low they didn't have an answer for it. Honestly, they could have done it almost at will... not sure why they didn't.
