Sam Darnold vs Nathan Stanley

So Sam Darnold is the first overall pick, right? Because right now he's looking exactly like Stanley. Many of his deep passes have no touch and he's been holding onto the ball too long all night. Is Stanley destined for the first round in a couple years?

USC’s line is trash. They have struggled to protect Darnold all season long
The same was true of Stanley's line much of the season. I believe that will improve next year. This also doesn't address his struggles with the touch pass tonight, many overthrows.

Maybe he's throwing this game to avoid going to the Browns.

When Darnold had time last night, he made throws that you don't see college, or most pro qb's make. His line and WR's were absolute garbage. If he gets a line and some receivers with a clue about route-running, he should be a pretty darn good one. As a Browns fan, he's the one I want.

Uh, Stanley looked NOTHING like Darnold when he played against O$U. That said, Darnold is the real deal, IMO.

I watched the whole game and I could not get out of my mind the fact that Iowa absolutely dominated OSU. Geez. USC won the Pac 12. It looked like men vs boys most of the game. The only other thing I noticed is that OSU blitzed the heck out of USC and they played Iowa pretty straight up. Then I thought about how close Iowa was to a 9 or 10 win season. Iowa's lack of consistency on offense, especially, is still hard to fathom.

And, in anticipation of response, I know: It was all KF's fault. Along with Brian.

If Gordon can stick around, he might have a chance, but that's 50/50, at best. The Browns management needs to do a George Costanza and do the exact opposite of every instinct they've ever had.

Totally agree. They fired their GM, who seemingly drafted players based on how they tested at the combine and the stats they put up in college.

Darnold can move around pretty well and make tough throws. Can Stanley make himself a little quicker, get his hip flexors and some other muscles working to give him a quicker takeoff. He doesnt have to be a 40 yard dash guy but just a little quicker to gather himself to get out of trouble and gain 5 yards or more a few times a game.

The two are nothing alike. Darnold is very mobile, whereas Stanley is a statue. As someone said Darnold makes throws you don't see guys make in college. Stanley is very inconsistent, slow decision maker, and is late getting the ball out very often. He does have a great arm however.

Bingo. He needs better pocket presence and to make quicker decisions and to move a little more like Roethlisberger. Hopefully that will come because he has the arm obviously.

But lets face it, outside our TE's there wasn't a lot to throw to this year. (Not great route running OR design). And hasn't for awhile. SO, YES coaching failure is ALSO a BIG part of this. Wadley should have been used more in the passing game this year with more quick hitters out of the backfield or slot. One can only imagine how that would have spread the defense and bought more time for Stanley to scan the field on the plays he didn't go to Wadley. So simple. Good grief. Most Football coaches aren't the brightest bulbs now are they?

Oh, and it would have been nice to actually see Wadley returning kicks DURING THE YEAR. DURING HIS CAREER.

Heard him on the radio last night. He said he literally sprinted to the meeting room when he got word he would be returning kicks in Pinstripe. I guess he never weighed enough for KF to allow him to do that. ??? Genius.

And for all you KF huggers, that is one major diference between Fry and Ferentz. Get your most dangerous players on the field. And use them.

Darnold to me it's about if he needs $ now and or how comfortable is he with risking injury for another year. If it's about football only he should come back. He's not even close to a ready to go plug and play NFL QB. No more then Kizer was or any number of the rookie QBs that came out. Darnold can really use another year of just playing football to improve his game. If the Browns or any other team think he'll step in day 1 and play really well on a bad team (he's not going to a good one) then they are fooling themselves. He'll be a 2-3 yr project. He could use 1 of those years getting better at USC... But if he wants to start cashing checks there's no less then 5 or 6 teams that'll be happy to take him in the 1st round if he were to drop a little. So coming back to college wouldn't be about improving his draft stock just his play and readiness.

After the Cotton Bowl Darnold told the press that it's hard to pass the ball when you are on the ground all the time. Ouch, burn to his o-line!

Ohio St should have used that game plan against us. They were way more aggressive on defense than in our game. Glad they didn't though.

I mean if our receivers drop 10% less passes we're at a 9-10 win season, so we can blame any and all of them.

I wasn't saying they are alike all the time, but your description of Stanley here was Darnold through the first 55 minutes of the game.

Wonder how Stanley would perform with USC’s receivers?

Like to see more “touch” with some of Stanley’s passes when the situation calls for it but I think this part of his game is improving.
