Salaries - doesn't make sense

KOK makes almost $70K more than Norm - doesn't make sense but what is even crazier is Phil Parker makes $12K more than Norm, WTF?

You realize Norm does zero recruiting. This is a non issue for Norm so why would you care? I think it is pretty clear that Norm has the absolute most repspect for Kirk, he is well take care of.

You are only looking at part of the picture. If you go to the DM register state salaries page and look at what they have made each year you will see that what they get compensated is very close to each other and different each year. Coaches salaries change every year by several thousands each year. They don't have jobs like you and me they have contracts that pay them different amounts each year much like a pro football player that has a huge bonus on the front end of their deal but their regular season pay is not that much. Before you start freaking out about what people get paid get all the facts.

KOK and Phil are probably the two most key on the road recruiters Iowa has...that's not to take anything away from the other coaches that go on the road like Erb and Wilson, Morgan, etc...

Pay is based on longevity and amount of work delegated. Shouldn't be hard to quantify. The only exception is Soup who was Associate Head Coach at Michigan. We obviously had to offer competitive pay to get him and it was well worth it.

I'm also willing to bet that paying for retention is another issue. Norm is old and, quite honestly, doesn't really need a whole lot of dough ... furthermore, he clearly really likes working with Ferentz ... consequently, Norm isn't much of a "flight risk."

Also, given his health, it's also great for him to be at a place like Iowa that has a great hospital.

Lastly, as others alluded, Norm's one and only job is teaching and coaching. Thus, an entire element of the job (recruiting) is not on his plate. In contrast, many other Iowa coaches spend a TON of time in the recruiting game for us (Johnson, O'Keefe, Phil Parker, Wilson, Morgan, etc).

Also, as a case in point .... I'm willing to bet that if Norm said that he needed more cash or he'd bolt ... Ferentz would leverage Barta into giving Norm a hike in pay.

The thing is ... I doubt that Norm really gives a crap. I think that Norm enjoys the job too much to worry about the money side of things.

Plus Norm doesn't need to buy all the personal protection/devices to keep safe from his adoring fans. ;)

When I first saw this on a thread (like 6 months ago...) I too was outraged. Through all the posts we came to realize that Norm doesn't put in near the hours as the other coaches and therefore doesn't get the pay. I think it is somewhat like semi halfway retirement.
Don't get me wrong, I too think he is the most valuable DC in the country. I think he should be paid more but I understand why he isn't.

I am never gonna take a paycut because I am old

Hey Jon, where did I say anything about Norm taking a pay-cut? I'm surprised since you're an entrepreneurial kind of guy that you'd seemingly not understand the "market-driven" explanation that I provided.

In a market system, value often has little to do with quality or merit. If you think that it should ... then maybe you're less removed from the populist labor-movement people than you ever realized.

If you look back a few years, KOK and Norm were paid equally. My thinking is similar to what others have said in that Norm puts in less time due to health limitations and the contracts are written accordingly. I am not sure how much time Norm spends on road recruiting but he is involved in on-campus recruiting. Maybe he has more time off in summer.
I think lower pay is not due to age but due to different responsibilities and time demands. What the differences may be, I dont know. I am sure if Norm didnt like it, he would have retired or left.
Someone should ask Kirk or Norm about it.
