The Newark Star-Ledger has an interesting "tick-tock" on the events leading up to Rutgers' decision not to fire Mike Rice when the abuse was first came to AD Tim Pernetti's attention, then the sudden reversal after highlights of the videos went viral on Tuesday. The university president was aware of the reports of physical and verbal abuse of basketball players, but relied on an outside law firm to investigate and make a recommendation on possible termination or other action and did not see the videos from himself until Tuesday night.
Will be interesting to see whether Pernetti survives this. He and the president, Barchi, may think that relying on the law firm helps buttress their actions and decisions in December. But it does not absolve them of their responsibilities as supervisors and administrators at a public university.
What is certain is that even with the firing, Rutgers still has a mess on its hands.
