Rotations

Wanted to see what everyone thought about rotations next year. Here is what I would like to see.

1. MG 30 min
2. Jok 20 min
3/4 JU 32 min
3/4 Uhl 18 min
5. Woody 25 min
6. AC 18 min
7. Hutton 15 min
8. Dale Jones 12 min
9. Fleming 12 min
10. Wagner 9 min
11. Moss 9 min

We are going to be deep again this year and this list doesn't include Brady (I'm not sold on him over the above players) or Williams (redshirt). The 7-11 spots are anyone's to win. The rotations will most likely get tightened come B10 season but I think this would give us a good mix of rebounding, defense, and 3 pt shooting. What say you?

(This is my first post so take it easy on me)

Go Hawks!

Go Hawks!

Good first post, and welcome. I think Fran will settle on a 8 or tops 9 man rotation by conference play.

Here's my take:

PG: Mikey, Sapp,
SG Peter, Mike, A Fleming, Hutton
3: Uhl, Isaiah, Hutton
4: J Uthoff, Baer, Wagner
5: Woody, ???

Not too bad of a post. I think there will be alot of movement over the next 60 days. I see a couple of the freshman getting more playing time. Welcome to the Nation and keep posting.

These seem pretty close, but I have a few changes. First, I think Gessel and Clemmons at 48 mins a game is too much because I don't want Clemmons at the 2 for 8 mins a game. Our offensive is not very good when they are both in the game. Also, you don't have Ellingson playing any minutes. But he could best the best pure shooter on the team. That should be worth a few mins a game. I mean if he ends up throwing up bricks like Ogelsby during the non-conference then by all means leave him out of the rotation, but otherwise bring him in for a few mins each game and if he's leave him in.

That being said, I realize a 12 man rotation is unlikely and likely one of Fleming/Moss/Ellingson won't see many minutes. I could also see Wagner fall off, especially in games where Woodbury stays out of foul trouble.

My thoughts:

1. MG 25 min
2. Jok 24 min
3/4 JU 32 min
3/4 Uhl 18 min
5. Woody 25 min
6. AC 15 min
7. Hutton 14 min
8. Dale Jones 13 min
9. Fleming 10 min
10. Wagner 8 min
11. Moss 8 min
12. Ellingson 8 min

2012,

Good points and you are right if Brady shoots the ball well he will earn some minutes. I'm of the belief that MG will have his 3 point stroke back this year and he and AC could share some time in a two point guard lineup. I know it didn't work as well in the beginning of the year last year but if I remember correctly we went with the 2 PG lineup down the stretch in some games last year and had some success.

One things for sure, there's going to be stiff competition for playing time at Shooting Guard and Small Forward.

Given the lack of size and how quickly Woody racks up the fouls (bogus as some may be, Nickster) a LOT more will be expected of Jones. Not to mention, he's got a rep as a good shooter. As of today, I'll be shocked if the intent is anything less than getting him 18 to 20 minutes, in combo with Uhl.

I also think most are underselling Gesell / Sapp. They averaged 26 and 20 last season but most of you have them less than that as seniors? Doesn't make sense.

I actually think Fran recognizes how big the drop-off is after his top 7 (Gesell, Sapp, Jok, Uthoff, Uhl, Jones, Woody) -- not due to lack of talent but severe youth / inexperience and lack of size -- and will run a much tighter / traditional bench than we've seen the last 2 years.

You guys are giving too many minutes to the newbies. I don't see any of them averaging more than 6 or 7 per game, with the majority coming in preseason.

^this... its the old "Dickerson is gonna start over Mike" line of thinking in the off season.

Some of the Newbies are gonna have to play, but thinking 4 or more of them are going to average close to the minutes Uhl did last year?

doubtful.

I see one maybe 2 of them being able to contribute this season with Jones having the leg up on the rest.

Ideally, 1 or 2 of the freshmen would redshirt, but in the "play now or transfer" world of college BB, not sure redshirting anyone will happen unless an injury.

I think the only 2 players with guaranteed minutes are Gesell and Uthoff at 30-35 minutes each, and I believe the rest of the minutes will be handed out based upon matchups and who has the hot hand. Since Woody will not play more than 20 minutes per game due to foul trouble or lack of scoring, anyone who can rebound, defend the paint and hit some shots will be seeing time at the "5".

Flemming will be getting a lot more than 10 or 12 mins by the time B10 play rolls around, would not be surprised if he's starting at that point.

Over who? Jok?

Man, if he meets this bar and Jok (and Ellingson?) are backing him up ... that's some serious perimeter shooting. I dig it!

Uhl was on a team dominated by upperclassmen. He would have played more most seasons. If the freshmen are better then they will play. Basabe, McCabe and others can vouch for the fact that the best player plays...even if it means putting a former starter on the bench and cutting his minutes.

I think a couple of the freshmen (including RS freshmen) will play significant minutes. I think a couple will get a few minutes. I'm hopeful at least 1 understands a RS makes sense with so many minutes opening up next year. Ultimately I suspect at least 1 and probably 2 guys in this class will move on at the end of the year.

Agree with this as well. The only freshman I see getting meaningful minutes are Fleming and possibly Hutton. Wagner may get 5 a game to help spell Woody.

I know basketball has really made a big shift towards small ball in the pros and college but I'm kind of wary of trying it out with this team.

The reason why teams like Iowa State have been able to play so successfully with it is they have players that can beat their opponents off the bounce(White, Niang, Morris, Kane, etc.) as well a plethora of shooting options.

Let's contrast this with a small ball team we recently beat, Davidson. Sure they had a bunch of players that could make threes, but they had no one to beat Iowa off the dribble and we destroyed their offense as a result. If we played them 10 more times, they may have been able to score 70 once or twice if they got lucky.

I'm scared that if we try playing small we'll be more of a Davidson than an Iowa State. If we roll out Fleming/Clemmons with Jok, I don't know if we'll be able to break down opponents in order to set up our three point shots. If any of these guys show the ability to beat people I don't have any real issue with playing small, I just don't know if they have that ability yet. This is why Moss being ineligible is such a huge blow because I believe that he has that ability, but he'll have to play catch up with everyone else in understanding the offense and defense.

With so many new players in this year, I can't even begin to guess at overall minutes for them. I think that Mike, AC, Jok, Uthoff, Uhl, and Woody are gonna take up about about 150 of the available 200 Min. per game. When conference play starts I think Fran will have his rotation paired down to 8 or 9 guys, with those 3-4 guys splitting those 50 min. or so.

Wait, what? Is Moss really ineligible? When did that happen?
