Rotation

I know this has been discussed, but with the past 2 games with Iowa probably playing their best basketball using a shorter bench, Fran was asked if he would continue to use a shorter rotation moving forward. Anyone else like to see the current rotation Fran has used the past 2 games?

From hawkeyereport.

Q: With your rotation now, you have played some of your best basketball in this past week using basically seven guys. Last season you rotated nine or ten and you have done that some this season. Would it be fair to say that if it's not broke don't fix it and you are comfortable with a seven man rotation?

McCAFFERY: I think that is going to be hard. I don't disagree with your point because we have had to do that the last couple of games and those guys have played so well. But, I think we are going to have to get Dom Uhl more minutes and I think we are going to have to get Josh Oglesby back in the lineup. He will be fine by Thursday. He just had a bug. I just think in this league with the intensity of the games and the length of the season and grind, you need more bodies. You never know who will have foul trouble. Who anticipated Aaron White getting a stinger in the first part of the Purdue game? Those kind of things are unforeseen and hopefully won't happen. But, you better have 9 or 10 guys ready in this league.

Having 9 or 10 guys ready does not mean they need to play extended minutes in a B1G basketball game. You can't plan your entire rotation on what-if scenarios at the end of the season. Injuries happen. Fouls happen. The game plan should be fluid.

For the first time in Frans tenure at Iowa, I'm starting to have concerns.

Fran's a smart guy. He can see the results. But he's also not going to discuss minutes in a press conference. It wouldn't surprise me to see Oglesby get back on the court, but his minutes get cut back if Jok continues to play well.

I think what the average fan may not consider is the turnaround from game to game and travel.

So for example, we are coming off a home game on Sunday with 3 days in between another home game. No travel. I would think the players should be fairly well rested and ready to go.

It will get tougher when we have 3-4 road games including a trip to the East Coast to Penn State and then Indiana with out returning home.

That is when the depth will play a more significant role.

Good point, iba. It's amazing how tiring it can be sitting on a bus or plane all day long.. For whatever reason, it wears you out. Much easier physically having a home stand compared to being on a road trip.

Starting to remind you of KF?

I think college coaches are babying these players. I played basketball sun up to sun down all summer long as a teenager. Then I went and played baseball at night. The kids today played multiple games a day in those AAU deals. Now They rarely even play every 3rd day in college other then the tournys in the early part of the year and then of course March. They aren't going to wear down playing 30 mins a game. Heck during my high school career our practices were twice as taxing as the games ever were and I started and played alot. I say play your best players in crunch time. Sure you want them as fresh as possible late but that doesn't mean having a 9 or 10 man rotation so much.

It could also be they want the bench guys to play cause if they aren't they'll have one eye on transfering in this day and age too so there is that I guess. I dunno it's just a different world then it was even just 10 yrs ago or so.

Comparing playground BB, or high school, or even AAU basketball to D1 Power 5 college BB is a joke, you do realize this right? Peter Jok, Aaron White are prime examples. They played all game long in HS, and in AAU. When both were Fr at Iowa, neither could have played more than 25 min a game. AW would be absolutely gassed playing that long, and so was Jok last year. It takes some time for many players to get used to the sheer intensity of D1 BB, and how much effort is exerted every minute on the court. Heck look at how completely gasses Gabe was in the Purdue game when Woody was in foul trouble. You have never been close to experience this type of intensity.

If you look at both AW and Jok now, they can both play considerable more min. than they could as a Fr. AW could go 35+ min a night, and Jok can play 25-30 MPG effectively.

The list of teams that have won a Conference Championship using 7-8 man rotations if far too big to try and list. Depth is only a word if you don't have the player's to back it up.

Iowa is a 6 man team that needs to sprinkle Uhl and Clemmons in just lightly enough to keep the top 6 fresh.

I'd be ok with getting Ogelsby back in the game as long as his minutes are under 5 until he can produce something. This should have been his best year but it's arguably his worst.

I agree Oglesby's minutes will drop. He has averaged about 22 minutes per B1G game, and I think it could drop to about 12.

Fran has a lot of respect for Josh. I wonder how many fans and folks on this board realize that Oglesby leads the team in assist to turnover ratio at 2.4, is third on the team in total assists, and averages 2.1 rebounds per game, second best of all the backcourt players. He takes care of the basketball, doesn't panic, and provides some senior steadiness. His defense has been above average as mentioned by coach several times this year.

Jok will likely get close to 25 minutes a game, and I expect that Gesell, White, and Uthoff will average 32 to 35 minutes a game in the stretch drive.

I don't believe that this is the first time you've had concerns. If anyone is having concerns after probably his best week as our head coach, they have had concerns before.

Jok needs to play, he's playing catch-up from the knee injury but the more minutes he gets the better he looks. Honestly I would rather start working Dickerson into the game than watch the trials of a guy we signed to shoot the ball struggle just to pass it to his teammates. He's not even looking to shoot anymore and when he has to shoot he has no confidence. Sad way to end a career.

I doubt that we'll see much of Dickerson the rest of the year, and Uhl will probably get fewer minutes down the stretch. Coach will depend a lot more on this upper classmen troops. And I agree with that.

Child, plz......................

Fran has to say this. What do you want him to say, "Yep, we're sticking with 7 guys. Those others, Uhl, Ogs, etc, they're done playing."

Having concerns? What? Fran is winning too much for you now?

Speaking of Gesell - what is the exact nature of the injury to his right arm? If he can't shoot the 3-ball because of the pain, doesn't that mean that the guy guarding him can basically lay off when Mike is outside 3-point circle? It appears to be an injury (muscle strain or pull) that is not going to get any better while he is playing. Wonder if cutting his minutes would help. I don't see that playing him 30-35 minutes a game is going to help us down the road.

From the excellent success I witnessed in the Maryland game (where Josh Ogelsby didn't play),
I'd slow the roll on getting him too many more minutes. And unless Dom Uhl starts playing stronger, then his minutes are going down, as well.

It's looking like these are the major minutes guys:

Mike Gesell
Peter Jok
Jarrod Uthoff
Aaron White
Adam Woodbury
Gabe Olaseni
& Sapp AC (spell the guards)

Gesell has looked pretty good to me of late. I can live without his 28% 3-point shooting the rest of the season if he just keeps doing what he's been doing.
