What would have been in it for him?
He could have been and still got his masters in marketing but he challenged himself to play with and win a job against the best... and he did.
He has a Natty Champ ring or two and as a bama alum the world is open to him

Reminds me of a parent of a student of mine that asked me why a former student went to Purdue to be an engineer when ISU is so close by. I started to explain, but realized I was talking to a cardinal and gold wall.

The most egregious living embodiment of this is Allen Lizzard. Dude had full rides to Stanford and Notre Dame and went Clown instead.
Not only was it a terrible educational decision, it was a terrible football decision.
At least he was fortunate enough to get drafted and make an NFL roster WAIT WHAT

Blythe and Matt Nelson had Stanford offers too. Nothing wrong with staying home - chances are an elite graduate school will be open to former athletes like these two and Ross P. Basically what happened with Rudock.
On the other hand, Oliver Martin's decision looks a lot different when viewed through this lens. UM is an elite public university - easily top five and probably a top 25 school overall (even when including the Ivies and Stanfords of the country).

to be fair, getting a 3.67 in the $EC means you actually show up for class. Doing your assignments gets you a 4.0
