Rick Brown: McCaffery sees key roles for Clemmons, Ellingson, Uhl

“Collectively, it’s going to better prepare us for what is going to be the most difficult season in the Big Ten since I’ve been in the league,” McCaffery said during an interview with the Des Moines Register this week.

Fran loves the hyperbole ;) I just don't see it...the top of the league is way down this year compared to the last two years....perhaps the middle is deeper and the bottom better?

I think every year they say the conference is the toughest its been in years. It makes the coaches job easier. There are going to be some tough teams, but Iowa should be fairly tough too.

Every year no matter the shape of the conference if you are the coach you are going to tell the players that everyone is tough. You don't want your players to get a big head and taking anyone lightly and for them to keep working hard and improving their game.

Hopefully, all the preseason hoopla will go to the heads of the Wisconsin players. They should have a good team coming back, but they aren't that good. There isn't any team in the big ten conference that can take the games for granted. It will be interesting to see how much the lower tier teams have improved over last year.

I did not read it as Fran saying the Big Ten is the toughest it has been since he has been here. I read it as Fran saying this is going to be the most difficult season for Iowa since he has been here. And if you look at our schedule, especially the first half, and the unknowns we have this year, I 100% agree with him.

I agree with you about the hyperbole and the league. That is why I do think Iowa can win it. There is no "best" team in 2014-15. The issue is that Iowa is largely unproven...not unknown, but unproven. If they step up, we could win it.

WUs had a great season, last season. Can't deny that. But I think they got on a roll more than they are talen laiden. Iowa should have beat them, last season. That team had a rallying cry, last season, which was the passing of Ryan's father. So, again, they got on a roll. We'll get them.

Win the big ten?? We're in the basketball forum bud.

I do believe we will beat the badgers at least once. We lost to them at Madison by 4 points with Fran's ejection, which was unwarranted. The referee walked into him. We lost to them by 5 points at Carver following the Indiana mess.....

We can beat them....

I agree with almost everything here, but Fran was likely well on his way to an ejection even without the "bump".

I agree with Fran that this will be Iowa's toughest year in the league since he arrived because of fans new expectations that Iowa should make the tourney, and how hard that will be for this Iowa team. The league is down from the last couple of years with the loss of all those lottery picks and first rounders....but that just makes the middle bigger and messier, and still with as good of talent as Iowa. From #2 thru #9...not much difference.

Yeah, Fran was practically begging for T's. But, with good reason, because the refs were in Boo-Boo's pocket that game. I don't want to reshash, but so many calls were bogus. Bohanan drew a charge on RDM or someone, under the basket and the replay showed Bohanan starting to fall backwards before the Iowa player even touched him. It was an obvious flop. The ref under the basket that made the call looked to have seen it out of the corner of his eye, but called it anyway.

You and TM are correct, Arvada, Fran was going down, and at the time it seemed as though the refs were giving the game to wisconsin. My son and I were screaming at the TV after the noncall followed immediately by an invisible foul.....

Take a look beyond MSU’s potential step back. Wisconsin’s entire final 4 roster is back. Michigan is now a program that reloads, there will be little to no drop off from an elite 8 team. Nebby, Minny, Indiana, Illinois, even Northwestern will be improved. tOSU has elite freshmen. Maryland enters the fray.

I think the point Fran was making is that the league is balanced and deep. There aren’t auto-wins that we can just let the CPU simulate anymore.
