Remembering the Pac 12………

……….. a lesson in cannibalism.

I have to admit that I haven’t paid much attention to the Pac-12 until the Big Ten expansion. This You Tube Video blew my mind! Did the Big Ten do the right thing???

Enjoy, but don’t bust a gut laughing at this conference over the last ten years.

@BigD thanks for sharing that. I've come to enjoy watching USC-UCLA and Oregon-Washington. Big games lots of excitment. Its exciting to have Iowa play those teams. Now if Kirk can decide to go beyond posessing the ball, we'll have a chance.

No, it really isn't. Sure, we beat USC a few years ago in a bowl game thanks in no small part to AJ ripping Slovis's arm off, but aside from that, games against upper tier Pac 10 teams have been nothing but a god damned house of pain for Iowa in my entire lifetime. I would love to go through the history, but I don't need to, you already know it. In my lifetime, Iowa has lost every single "BCS" level bowl game it has played against the Pac 10. Iowa has lost every regular season game out west against decent teams, with the only exceptions being a couple of wins at Arizona in the '80's. I'd much rather play our heated rival, Purdue, than sending the boys out West.

Iowa split with ASU and UofA. Iowa won BigTen style in Kinnick 2003 and 2009 and lost on the road PacTen style in 2004 and 2010

I did enjoy watching UCLA in Kinnick the year Hayden got Iowa back into the Rose Bowl. Reggie was booming kicks ( that was fun in and of itself) and we had a monster on defense (Andre Tippett Sr that was having fun with the Bruins running backs and QB. They couldn’t do nothing against our defense that day.

What makes going to the game different than watching it on TV is you can seen the whole field and can get a great feel of how the defense is in control of the opposing team’s offense.

You are absolutely correct about the record, that part is in the books. But I bet that 80% of those games were not played in Kinnick Stadium. I think it will be measurably more difficult for any of these teams to come into our house and walk all over us.

Granted that USC and Oregon are recruiting at a much higher level than we are, closer to what Ohio State and Michigan do. But I think when those teams have to travel (especially later in the season when it starts getting colder) the Hawks and our fanbase will be ready.

I got an amusing taste of the Pac10 when living in SF in the late '70s/early '80s. In the Bay Area The Game (that's what they called it) each year was Cal/Stanford. A nice, local rivalry which the students, fan bases, and alumni really got into. In one of the all-time great collegiate highlights, Stanford scored to go up 20-19 with 4 seconds remaining. They squib-kicked, Cal lateralled the ball around a few times, broke a run down the field to the 20 yd line, but by that time the entire Stanford band had come onto the field in victory -- the Cal player ended up busting through and running over Stanford band members for the victory!

I read an interesting article on one reason the Pac 12 fell apart like it did.

ESPN reportedly offered a media deal where each school would get $30M/yr. A few of the presidents felt like they could and should get more, like $50M/yr. They took this back to ESPN. Then ESPN came back with a $21M/yr offer. The commissioner was so embarrassed he didn't want to go public with the info, wouldn't even bring it up at the conference media days. Then when he did the exodus started.

Funny thing about the Pac 12. For 10-15 years they couldn't make a decision, couldn't agree on anything. Merton Hanks used to and maybe still does work for the Pac 12 and he's reported on this before. Anytime there was a major decision that needed to be made the schools couldn't agree., even on realignment. How many times where there when there was conference realignment and the Pac 12 official position was 'we like where we are now and are going to stand pat and monitor the situation'. Finally USC and UCLA said f""" that.

Saw that (not live)

USC and UCLA won't like the cold but those kids from Washington and Oregon play in cold weather.

We all remember the Stanford band, lol…….. couldn’t have happened to a more deserving band!

I remember watching that play over and over on ESPN.
