Regarding Gregg Marshall

I always try to be a straight shooter, and if I stray from that path I know that I have tens of thousands of people that will help keep me in line, so I appreciate that :)

Marshall made my Two thru Five story last week, but I had him listed under the 'More Up Tempo Coaches' list that I asked Van Coleman to prepare for me.

Here is what Van wrote:

Gregg Marshall - Wichita State – 2007 to present – (Age 46) – 247-129 overall / 53-46 at Wichita State (25-9 this year) He has been a winner everywhere he goes playing athletic full court game as he has been to seven NCAA tournaments and two NIT tournaments. Team averages 69.3ppg and he will play up tempo once he establishes talent level. He has a strong recruiting base in the South and Mid-Atlantic areas to go with Texas. He would definitely need to add a big-time recruiting coordinator (Tracy Webster/Derrick Thomas) to open Chicago & Midwestern urban areas to his staff’s recruiting. But, has recruited Big 10/12 level athletes to Wichita. Great promoter will sell program to fans!

Tom Kakert of hawkeyereport.com posted today that he believes there have been some discussions between Iowa and Marshall, but those didn't go anywhere.

To be blunt, I have not had any discussions re: Marshall with the folks I am talking with, outside of what you see above. By no means are my conversations and what I report here a comprehensive snapshot of the process Iowa is going through, and I have tried to make that clear at numerous stops along the way. I am just passing along to all of you what I can.

As it relates to Marshall, as you can see from what Van posted, the guy would need significant help by way of recruiting assistance. A coach that has not had an major D1 recruiting experience is going to need a lot of help on that front if he becomes the head coach at Iowa. Marshall has had quite a bit of success at Wichita State, and he will have a really good team next year.

All this being said, I just don't think this will happen. I could be wrong, but I would not wager on Marshall being the next Iowa coach.

While I think we are entering the time frame where people are being spoken with regarding the job, possibly even being interviewed, we are therefore entering the time frame where rumors and the like are going to be flying at a faster pace. If you have been around message boards in the past, most of the stuff that happens in reality began to gain steam on a message board somewhere.

So I am not saying don't pay attention to rumors and smoke on the boards...but typically when something is going to have traction, it gains steam everywhere, and there are voices along the way that keep the acceleration going, like we saw on 3/11 with regards to the smoke that Lickliter was out.

This is the part of the ride that gets bumpy and goes at break neck speed.

Good post. Kinda like how Rick Majerus to Iowa was a "done deal" 3 years ago, and then Majerus comes out and says that he's not going to Iowa. Oops.

On the flip side, I seem to remember that the Lickliter hire came totally out of left field, so I'm not convinced that we'll ever really hear anything picking up steam regarding the hire this time, either. But I think you're right that if there are a bunch of sources coming out with the same story, then yeah, there is probably some fire to go with the smoke.

No doubt about it. I don't recall typing Lickliter's name up until it was darn near in a press release that he had been hired.

That's what scares me a little bit about these rumors. If there is truth to them this hire will come out of nowhere and be one that most Hawk fans are not happy with. Barta's decision could spell doom for much of the Hawkeye faithful.

Since the outset, I have not held a great deal of hope for a 'home run'.

To me, that would be someone that unifies everyone and has everyone really excited. There are too few names out there for that...Pearl was one.

So I have accepted the current situation of the basketball program, and realize the work Gary had ahead of him would be significant. I fully expect the name to be one that probably doesn't thrill everyone...but style of play and recruiting ties and whom he hires for his staff are far more important to me than a name...we need someone that can roll up their sleeves and knows full well what he is undertaking.

I think at this point this is the most important thing. And knowing "full well what he is undertaking" is taking the immediate steps to remedy any weaknesses he may have. If that means adding someone to the staff who can recruit the hell out of the Midwest and Chicago and keep Iowa kids in Iowa, that's fine with me.

Yeah, I'd like a name. But I don't think we're going to get it.

(I would not, however, mind the sight of Steve Lavin's wife sitting courtside at CHA ...)

I'll bet a lot of guys would pony up big donations if that meant seats close to Lavin's wife.
