Reese Morgan Looking for Deep Rotation on Defensive Line

Anyone else surprised by the Golston move? His updated weight was listed at 265, while Brincks is at 275 and Epenesa 277. It was also mentioned last spring by hawkeyegamefilm that Golston had natural outside pass-rush moves (good lean, slipperiness).

So I am left wondering why Golston and not Brincks or Epenesa? I think Epenesa is staying at one spot because he is young, trying to grasp everything, and he has so much potential at DE that they don't want to mess with a "sure thing." I could see him moving around more next year as they hunt mismatches on passing downs, much like JJ Watt has been used in the pros.

Brincks seems like he would have been an obvious guy to move inside: he is bigger, and I have not heard the same raves about his pass-rushing. Does Golston have greater growth potential (sophomore vs. Brincks as a senior)? Are they excited enough about his potential and they think he gets more snaps as 4th DT than as 4th DE? Are they so excited about Brincks' growth at DE that they think he will be a disruptive force?

Not questioning the decision at all because Reese Morgan is heavily involved, just really curious about what it means for the '18 DL and how excited I should be because of it.

I would think the priority with Epenesa would be to get him to learn the defensive end position without too many distractions. People around here want him to play Super Man before he has had a chance to settle in.

I just love that they are trying to find a way to get Golston on the field. Granted, it's to fill a void left by Matt Nelson, but I'd like to see him inside matched up with a guard on 3rd and long. Reese said it...which every Hawkeye fan should be very concerned about...we are undersized without Nelson and we are an injury away from being really undersized. That is never good in the B10.

How about Reese getting emotional talking about former players...etc. Love that guy.

I think it is a case of them wanting to get him on the field and DT might be the path of least resistence.

I think we would see Parker slide inside more if an injury occurs.

Reese is the real deal. One of the best hires by KF period. So yeah the undersized DTs could be an issue time will tell. I sure hope Matt Nelson isn't out too long and will be ready for the season to start. Good thing is as experienced as he is he doesn't need an entire spring or summer to practice so much. Just need him fresh and healthy

Golston at 265# pounds at dt is very worrisome
Yes it is. They are going to have to have excellent technic and motors that never stop.
Be nice to see two big mlb's clearly stand out for this exact reason. Because if dt is our weak spot, our mlb's are going to have big #'s.
Even if they just look a little undersized, that is where they will try and punch through.

Tough to have good #'s when the d line is subpar

I'm really curious if they are on the Grad transfer market looking for a big DT. Shannon is probably is too young to step in as a true freshman...but he has size. A very large DT who is a 5th year senior from a mid-major would be just what the dr. ordered.

That's what I would be doing. I would also feed Shannon as much as he can handle this summer and try to get him up to speed. If he has strength and good weight.

Iowa has played against guys that size who have given them plenty of trouble.
I think King and Klug were both undersized. Correct me if I’m wrong. And they were pretty successful.
The exception to the rule. It's not that it can't be done, just makes it harder.
Who was playing LB and DE during Klugs most successful year? I'm not taking anything away from him. Please do not think that. Merely pointing out the circumstances were different.

I think a lot depends on how Lattimore develops as a run stuffer. He isn't quite the prototypical one technique guy Jaleel Johnson was, at least so far. There are a couple of guys who might adequately back up in a similar role.

It appears they are looking for a quick aggressor, among some of the smaller guys, to create some pressure up the middle in a role similar to what King and Klug did in the past. It has been a while since Iowa has had someone truly disruptive up the middle.
