Red Shirts after Freshman Year

Might this not be an option for the coaching staff and the wide outs, depth charts and future considerations for this season and those that come later?

The red shirting of Colin and/or Keenan?

Because DJK and Marvin and Paul Jr are coming back.. along with Don Nordmann (everyone says he can deliver) and the word is Jordon Cotton will bust out as a red shirt frosh including work as a punt return man… and maybe a James Hurt or a true freshman Don Schumpert (sp?)

Why not save Colin and/or Keenan for next year and/or another year,

Colin is the best punt return man Iowa has back and if he can be replaced why not red shirt him? ( He won’t turn pro early, is a team player, will stay around, and still might end up playing in the pros after another year of seasoning.) If Colin red shirts he would provide another experienced and seasoned vet for the 2011 receiving corp.

If Don and Jordon and Paul Jr. are ready and able to play behind DJK and Marvin… why not red shirt Keenan? He has pro potential and may not want to sit, but if Colin plays… aren’t there too many studs for to few of spots?

This would allow senior leadership and quality continuity for the next year or two after losing DJK, Paul Chaney Jr., Don, and Marvin, (assuming gone after 4 years of college, 3 years of play, and 2 years as a STUD receiver).

Just some thoughts and welcome your comments…

i don't recall KF ever doing that for a position player. esp a position where depth is crucial.

Actually, that was the plan for Shonn before he failed out. Pretty widely publicized. However, I don't see it in this situation. Colin isn't going to gain much by a RS year and you wouldn't want to stall Davis' progress. The answer is to have a productive offense that scores a bunch of points and keeps possession.

The player would have to request a redshirt in this situation for KF to consider it. I think Shonn was on record he wanted to play RB and would rather RS than play elsewhere.

The only other way I see one of those guys redshirting is if they are injured and cant play, which would make it an obvious decision.

This is why I like the most talented freshman get their feet wet. It makes getting a Medical Red-shirt much easier. Moeaki would be a good example of that. As long as you only play the first four games and have an injury that keeps you out for the rest of that season you are guaranteed that 5th year.

If someone were to Red-shirt this season I would like to see Willie Lowe consider it. We are sitting with 3 talented Cbs in the same class- Prater, Bernstine and Lowe. It would be nice to stagger that a little.

Makes no sense, well it does from a pure football standpoint but it would be a jerk move. These are men who want to live their lives whether it be NFL or most likely something else. They want to play their last year and move on.

I've actually done that in NCAA 2010. I guess I'm a jerk, but it sure helped the next season.

this is a unique situation, but because of what the goals of this team are for this season, i think Kirk wants all hands on deck. Shohn Greene was a different situation because there were 2 RBs ahead who split carries, and he wouldn't have been used as much as these WRs would be this season
