Recruiting Strategy?

With all the pursuit of various SF transfers, present and now past, is anyone else mystified as to why we aren't going harder after a C/PF type for 2015? After the seniors leave this year, we are left with Woody backed up by Uthoff as it stands now looking at the roster. I can understand Fran wanting to upgrade our wing quickness, but what about the middle? 2014-15 and 2015-16 have got to be considered as make or break years on the court for the program. Does he really want to go into 2015 with just Woody at center? And, unless Boudreaux is in the bag already, there's no true 4 either. Pemsl and other 4-5 recruits he's going after won't be there until 2016. Is there something I'm missing here?

I don't know what your missing, but I'm sure Fran could explain it. Uhl probably will be around 6 foot 9 and 235 pounds after his freshmen year. They probably feel pretty confident about some of the guys they are after in the next class. Huff sounded like a pretty good player, but I wasn't really that high on Atwood. I'm pretty sure they have offers out to a lot of centers in the 2015 class. It would be nice if Hutton grew another two or three inches before he finishes high school. He is only a junior this year. If Iowa doesn't get what their after this fall, they always have next spring to find someone.

It is strange that we've heard about 3 big guys for the 2016 class, but not a single one prior to that. I'm a little confused. I'm sure Fran knows whats up. There are probably a couple offers out there that we don't know about.

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm a believer that you need at least 2 players that can play each position otherwise injury or foul trouble will kill a team. The only position they don't have at least 2 players capable of playing for the 15-16 season is center. With, if my math is correct, 4 scholarships available in the '15 class, you would think Fran could get at least 1 center.

Think Fran has to play it close to the vest, he has a talent to perceive the diamond in the rough, Aaron White, for instance. Any player he is interested in that is public knowledge runs the risk of the usual suspects in the top 25 every year jumping on board with kidnapping on their minds.....

Samir Sehic tweeted that he received an Iowa offer today. 6'9" 250 lbs PF from Texas, class of 2015. Recently on a visit to Baylor. Looks skilled in the video I saw. Not a flyer or above the rim player, but very good around the rim. Don't know if he's expected to grow or not, but his skill set looks much like Niang's. Not sure if he can shoot from outside as well, but he does have a good looking jump shot.

Kid loves to bang, goes hard to the hoop, nice big body on him to create some separation....nice looking kid...

C'mon Jack...I made a blind over the head full court shot ONE TIME...does that mean I have a talent for it? :D

I think so, because it says he's 6'7" and now he's reported as 6'9"

I like him a lot more as 6'9" than 6'7". His body type looks much better suite for a 6'9" thick power forward than a 6'7" oversided SF who would be too slow for the posistion.

Agreed, as a PF you can get away with being slower afoot if you have solid fundamentals and solid frame. Atleast from the video, he doesn't look to have the skill set of a three. Well, maybe in Fran's eyes, I'd like more outside shooting from a 3.

Nice article about Samir Sehic just came up on 247. Looks like he'd like to visit after his AAU season.

Notable quotes:
Samir Sehic, 6-foot-9, 250 pound basketball center, is one of the more physically imposing big-men you'll find in the 2015 class.
"Head coach Fran McCaffery offered me," Sehic told Voice of the Hawkeyes. "They like the way I play. They like how I can stretch the floor and shoot it, but also go inside and battle."

"I love the way that they play, they seem to fit me very well," he explained. "And coach McCaffery really seems like he's doing a good job up there."

Sehic doesn't have any visits planned right now since he's right in the middle of an AAU season. He plays for the Texas Titans out of Dallas, which may be best known right now as the team that previously featured Kentucky's Julius Randle.

He did say he would "love to go and visit" Iowa, though.
