Recruiting Selling Point

I was listening to the Dan Patrick Show podcast from Friday today and he was interviewing Atlanta QB Matt Ryan. They were talking about paying players and Matt was joking that they would need to pay him a little extra in Boston than in Iowa City. He stated something like "A Bud Light in a midwestern town like Iowa City costs a little less than a Bud Light in Boston." But something that I never really considered is that a lower cost of living in the midwest than the east coast or a large metropolis is possibly a selling point, or at the very least, something a recruit realizes when he visits the midwest. I'm not attributing most or all of Ferentz's eastern recruiting success to this but I'm sure it plays some sort of factor. Nothing to really elaborate on but something I just really hadn't thought about which surprised me today.

I just think its cool that he used Iowa City as his example. 20 years ago it would have been Lincoln, NE or South Bend, IN.

People looking at a job transfer would take this into consideration, but I would be surprised if an 18 yr old football star choosing a school with free education is thinking about cost of living. Interesting point and that Matt would use IC as an example.

Definitely with you on that one. I can't see an 18 year old who's never been out on their own caring one way or another about the cost of living in one city vs. another.

Also amazed that Matt would name drop IA City as well. I'd be willing to bet he's never been in Iowa, let alone IA City.

Ryan was offered a scholarship by Iowa when he was a high schooler in PA. The Hawkeyes had four primary targets at QB that year: Drew Tate and Eric McCollum along with Chris Leak and Matt Ryan. Iowa, BC, GT, and Purdue was Ryan's offer sheet, so that would explain why he thinks of Iowa when he is talking about recruiting.
