Recruiting needs for 2014

The 2013 boat has really sailed, and I like the class honestly, but what I think Iowa needs were made pretty evident on Saturday.

1. WR that can catch the football. We knew they weren't going to be great at separation, but catch the ball when you are open. Hopefully the QB will see you.

2. I don't think you are going to consistently win with a pocket QB like Iowa plays. Yes that type of QB works, but you have to have playmakers at the skill positions and be able to execute, a lot. Iowa doesn't consistently have the talent to do this around a Stanzi/Vandy type. However, teams with mobile QBs can win. I'm not saying Denard like, but a guy that can stretch the pocket, make a few runs when he needs to and pressure the defense with his legs. Greg Davis' system is better for this type of QB.

3. Nastiness on the line. This is always the case and continues to be the case. I don't think our lines are that bad but always need them.

4. A back that can carry the load to go with a complimentary player. I don't think any of the RBs on the roster are carry the load backs, but good change of pace players.

When I look at the 2013 recruits I see some of this, but not much. Looking at 2014, there are a lot of instate guys that can help with this.

1. Scheel, not sure he is a QB but he seems to be a guy that can run and throw. Maybe a thought there.

2. Lazard and Booth. These guys seem to be legit and if Iowa could get 1 or both that would be great. I think the freshman now have potential too, but wh knows for sure.

3. Pierschbacher is a huge intstate kid that I think is a must get. I hope Iowa can get one of those highly ranked tackles they are in on, maybe Orlando Brown, that would literally be a huge get. Who knows, but hopefully they can cash in on their reputation for once.

4. Jones or Wrench both seem like kids that are bigger and have some speed. I think both are real long shots, but man they are kids that could be 4 year legitimate starters.

Iowa needs some huge upgrades in talent. Again we are seeing the weakness of the 2008 and 2009 recruiting classes right now, but Iowa needs to recruit well the next few years and also toward their schemes a bit better. Hope some of these kids can come to Iowa, even though this is going to be a tough year to watch Iowa football.
