-3x Undefeated State Champion
-Fargo Cadet and Junior Champion
-2011 US Cadet World Freestyle Team member at 54 kg
Fulsaasfan's breakdown:
Background: Gilman is a 3 time undefeated Nebraska state champion for Omaha Skutt. He also was the 2011 Junior Nationals freestyle champion in Fargo this summer as well as being a member of the cadet world freestyle team that competed in Hungary.
Strengths: There are plenty of strengths for Gilman and to me he is the most complete of the Iowa recruits this year. He is a “Mat Rat†that loves to compete and has a great feel for the sport in all positions. He is especially strong in the front headlock position and really uses heavy hands to wear his opponents down. Even with all of his past accomplishments he just seems to be getting better and better.
Areas for improvement: This is harder to find for Gilman as he is a pretty complete wrestler. He is used to wrestling from a tie and will need to get used to wrestling in space a little more at the next level. He will need to keep working on his mat wrestling during a redshirt year as well as he has won a lot of matches from his feet at the high school level. If he can keep guys from riding him in college he will be very tough to beat.
USAFHawk's breakdown:
Thomas Gilman is the prototype when it comes to an Iowa wrestler. He has a in your face style with a motor that never stops. He is very heavy handed and he uses them nonstop to move and snap his opponent out of position. He has excellent short offense and is nearly unstoppable from the front head position. He can score off a variety of moves from the front head, but is really good at completing go behinds. Most of his offensive scoring is generated off of his violent hand fighting skills and heavy pressure on the head. He is also very good at getting to the legs and when he does he finishes without much wasted effort. It will be interesting to see how he is able to wrestle out in space when forced to, as he hasn't not been forced to yet in his HS career. He also has very good mat awareness, but his confidence and over aggressiveness sometimes leaves him vulnerable to slide by's and defensive roll through's.
On the mat Thomas shows a strong desire to ride and while he isn't sticky on top he is very effective and relentless often wearing down his opponents. He likes to control opponents with bar arms and does a very nice job of keeping his opponent flat with constant forward pressure. On the bottom he shows good explosiveness and has a great first move and does a good job of putting multiple moves together until getting the escape. He will sometimes struggle with guys who stop his first move as he likes to tripod up which forces his weight on his hands.
Thomas Gilman is a no frills type of wrestler, a bit of a throwback. He is very consistent and can score points in a hurry due to his style of wearing his opponents out. He is probably the most college ready wrestler in the 2012 class, but will get a chance to develop while redshirting his first year on campus. He is either a 125 or 133, but I could definitely see him as a career 125 much like McDonough.
