reactions to iowa bball after nebby loss

1) I thought this game was a trap game and it turned out to be. I didn't watch or listen to it but I do realize that all the anger is directed more to the way we lost than that we lost.

2) no go to guy...this isn't that big of a deal. The problem is that we try and make marble into one. Many college teams don't and the teams that win with that system do it by not isolating their closest thing to it too much. Marble does great things within the offense and struggles when trying to play more one on one nba style. College bball is more team oriented stick with that.

3) we can't shoot long range. We have to attack and try to get and 1s for our 3s. We have to be very judicious with our 3 pt attempts. Ogelsby needs to play good defense knock down a couple of mid range 2s then shoot some 3s. He seems to do better when that is how he starts the game.

4) 10 man rotation isn't being used properly. Any rotation is predicated on certain substitutions at distinct times and situations. We do this in the 1st half. But in the 2nd we typically kind of do this at the start but then fran typically tries to go with the guys that are working the best. If no one is playing well then it makes it difficult to finds the guys and he will probably keeps changing guys to find a group that will work. Not saying he does a good job with this...just what I see him doing.

5) we are young. I don't buy into it is the end of the yr so frosh are now sophs belief. They haven't been through the guantlett down the last stretch of the season and will probably make more frosh mistakes because the pressure is amped up. They aren't. Reverting they are just freshmen.

6) every lineup we throw out has holes. Those holes may go away next year or the year after but with where we were it is expected that we would have holes...remember we are only 3 yrs removed from lick. Starters have 1 guy in a position that isn't his best. Bench 5 don't have legit scorers. We could go on but it is just rehashing what we know.

7) we are where most people predicted we would be. Looking at a 9-9 record with an outside chance at the ncaa tourney. And yes I believe we still can make it. We just need to upset indiana (very unlikely) or get to the championship of the btt while holding serve on the rest of our games (also very unlikely).

Good post. I think we have to remember where Fran started - we were the worst team in the Big Ten during Lick's final season. We have gone from 11-20 to a current 17-10 with many winnable games left on the schedule, and this has been done with 3 freshmen and 2 sophomores getting significant minutes. I think the future is bright for Iowa BB under Coach Fran.

We weren't just the worst team in the big 10. We were the worst team with a depleted roster due to 3 or 4 years in a row of some of our best players leaving. Not to mention the terrible job recruiting that Lick did. It says a lot when you bring in a freshman who was committed to Sienna and he is instantly the 2nd best player on the team.

Yes, a big hole to dig out of. However, if the botched dunk, missed bunnies, and if just one of the bricks by our deignated sharpshooters put up, just one, we don't lose to that putrid program.

No doubt. We are so close to being a really good team. Next year I think we get there.

I'm sorry, but we blew a 20 point lead to Nebraska with NCAA hopes on the line. Let that sink in for a minute...

Let's assume for a minute that you are a reasonably intelligent person that has both gone to school / college as well as work in the business world. With that in mind, what you are saying is that you NEVER studied like he$$ for a final, knew the material inside and out, yet for reasons maybe unknown you bombed the test? Or, maybe you prepared like anything for that crucial business meeting, yet, on the day of the meeting, totally froze and lost the deal or screwed up in front of your boss? I might suggest you let both of those situations sink in for a minute before you bury / criticize 18-20 year old kids....

Oh--ok.. Now everyone can feel so much better..

Last I checked, 18-20 years old makes one an adult, not a kid.

As for studying like hell for a test, knowing the material inside and out, and still bombed the test? I've never had a problem with bombing a test under the circumstances you just outlined. So no, that has never happened to me. Let's say for the sake of argument that it had happened - I would call that "choking".

I'm not sure it's as simple as 'the team choked,' even though they did (especially given the lead).

I think the schedule (and previous missed opportunities) is such that it set up a 'zero margin of error' situation. That additional pressure would be rough on any team.

Even though I assumed they'd get to 20 wins, and thought (incorrectly) that it would be enough to get them in ... once it became clear that they needed to go 6-1 in the last 7, I think it was safe to assume the team would have one stumble (especially on the road).

I also expect next year to be better; if it isn't, concern is justified.

I expect next years team to be pretty good. The hawks may even try and make some noise in the tournament this year. But that loss on Saturday sucked any enthusiasm I had going into this week. I'll still be watching and rooting for them as usual, but to lose that game the way they did was the ultimate face palm moment. I know they were close against better teams this year, but this is one that would of put them back at .500 and kept the dream alive.

It was a demoralizing loss...no doubt about it. Hope the team can bounce back.

My thoughts:

1. Nebraska got a huge break with the extra two days rest due to the postponement. It allowed them to re-charge even more after a tough loss to MSU,and also allowed them to play their starters the entire second half without wearing down. Iowa's big edge on teams like Nebby is not our starting 5 vs their starting 5(theirs is arguably better), but it is our second 5,especially at the end of the season when legs are dead. That edge was mitigated by a full weeks rest for Nebby. Bad break for Iowa.

2. They have some quicker athletes than Iowa, who are streaky shooters...who were on in the second half....Talley,Garegos,and Shields are hard for Iowa to match up against. Same thing almost happened vs PSU at PSU...Newbill almost carried the Nits to a win.

3. Iowa needs to add guy or two like Talley to the mix. Tough, street ballers who are not afraid down the stretch. In Licks last year, I was calling on him/then Fran in the spring,to recruit a Chicago guard,Mike McCall, out of Foreman HS. Majerus ended up getting him to go to St Louis. He is a exactly the kind of tough-minded street baller we lack now....shooting 43% from the arc,and averaging 11pts a game on a good St Louis team bound to the NCAA and a A-10 title. He was still there in the spring, but we did not get in on him in time. We need to find a kid like him soon.

3. We still need a difference-maker. We have a roster full of role players right now,and that is fine, but you can only play 5 at a time. I think next year we will be a little better, and the top of the league will back up,so should be enough, but still puts a ceiling on our hopes, imo. Dev is simply not quick enough to do the isolation play at the top at the end of games....too predictable, like saturday..charging foul.

This wasn't that simple. That game was like getting the first 59 questions of that exam correct, meaning you only have to get 1 more right in order to pass. Only you miss the next 41 and fail.

If we would have had a 6 point lead at the half instead of 16 we probably would have been better off. It's human nature to relax after building that big of lead. Couple that with the other team playing like they have nothing to lose and its easy for this to happen. Most of the time when you're good enough to build that kind of lead you're good enough to relax a little and still win the game. We are not good enough yet and it cost us big time. If we win out other then indiana and win 2 in the tourney, this loss is going to haunt the team and the fans for a long time.

Yep, same thing Minnesota did a week ago with a far more experienced and talented roster, an NCAA bid on the line, and their coach on the hot seat. Happens in sports, especially to a bunch of amateur athletes, many who were attending prom and riding the yellow school bus about 10 months ago. Iowa will win again soon. Enjoy the season.

Disappointment is part of the fabric of existence. Much of the nature of God and man is built around disappointment of one kind or another. I truly believe that real character is demonstrated on how we deal with disappointment. Some people (a lot of people here it would seem) lash out at those who disappoint them, while others show faith that what is meant to be will come to fruition.

I cast my lot with the latter.
