Re-watching the game on DVR and I have to say

that is some of the worst tackling I have ever seen from an Iowa defense in a long, long time. Lowdermilk and Bowers(41) missed so many tackles that I quit counting at 6 apiece. That was mid way thru the 3rd qtr. If those 2 are the best we have to offer at those positions, we do not have the talent to compete for a BIG title.
The offensive line blocking was bad across the board. Getting beat by plain old fashioned hustle and tenacity.
Kirk was right. He should be embarrassed.

Agreed.. It was horrible. I've actually noticed this for a 2 to 3 years now and IMO it started when Norm left..

Both offensive and defensive coordinators are huge down grades from their predecessors. Kirk could have moved the program forward with two strong and innovative hires, but we got Davis and Parker.

Parker has been fine. Players were constantly in position to make plays defensively today, and they simply failed to do so. I know Iowa fans have grown tired of hearing about execution, but Parker can't make the tackle for them.

That's pretty much what I saw today. Guys in position to make tackles but not getting it done.

Poor fundamentals. Wrap up. You can't run if your legs can move. King is a good tackler. He gets in on an opponent's legs and makes tackles. That's the way it should be done.

The linebackers are extremely raw unfortunately.

This is simply the ongoing flaw in Kirk's system. The recruiting and player development never match up. Kirk and Doyle are an incredible team when it comes to developing talent we all know that. The problem is the team will lose 4-5 guys that are developed in his system, they're usually fun players to watch and end up playing at the next level. It then takes 2 years to replace them, in the two years it takes to get the new guys in place, guess what, the next set of strong developed players cycle through the program leaving holes some place else. Losing 8-9 guys in two years that you can't replace for another 2 just doesn't work.

It would take elite recruiting to break this cycle, and he's never brought in elite recruiting classes.

That's an ongoing flaw at just about any program similar to Iowa, which is why we'll never be an Alabama/Texas/etc.-type program. Those programs can have dry spells, but they can put together long runs of success that programs like Iowa simply can't match over the long haul, whether it's due to tradition, geography, elite coaches/recruiters, boosters slipping $100 handshakes, or (in most cases) a combination of all of the above. It's not exclusive to Ferentz's system.

This.

Huge props to anyone that can re-watch that garbage.

I didn't rewatch it, but I did watch the second half on DVR after knowing how the game turned out (had to work during the second half). I couldn't help myself; I had to see it with my own eyes to believe just how bad it was.

Nothing against Bo Bower, but him starting in the Big Ten as a RS frosh is a complete recruiting failure by Kirk Ferentz. I think he will be a good player 2 or 3 years down the road

Another fallout of Ferentz's system is by not having blowout games the second and third stringers don't get on the field hardly at all..

Herein also lies the problem. I am not saying he is not a decent player but now we have a penciled in, guaranteed starter for 4 years. Good luck recruiting to that spot for another 3-4 years. This means no depth and no competition to see if we can upgrade to a better player. Happens all the time in this program. If he never improves we are stuck with a deficiency.

I'm amazed, and sort of impressed (in a perverse way), that someone could re-watch that game.

You'd have to be:

1. Incredibly analytical
2. Batship crazy
3. both?

This really bothers me. The teams we should be able to defeat handily we cannot. So the 2nd and 3rd stringers NEVER get to play. That sucks for them because they are busting their *** as hard as the starters and never get to see the field and get game experience. Its got to be deflating to never play when you work so hard but just don't have the talent to be a starter. And never play as a reward for the hard work you put in all year.

It's pretty clear that Lowdermilk benefited greatly from having 3 really good linebackers last year. Gair looked the part when he saw action, but I doubt he sees the field again this year.

Hawkeyes Gamefilm made the observation that Gair should probably be in there with the way Lowdermilk is playing but he doesn't see Ferentz benching a 5 year senior in the middle of the season..

This. And our LBs on the roster and severely lacking in talent.

Oh I definitely agree. Lowdermilk, like many others in the Iowa program, have zero business on a BCS level roster let alone being a starting SS. Slow, bad tackler and gets beat constantly. Between he and Tanner Miller last year, there have been more breakdowns with the safeties the past 2 years, then probably the previous 15 years combined.
