RB Depth Chart for 2011

I look at it and I think that it could actually go many ways. I think a lot of people look at Coe and think he will be a force because of his size and I think some coaches do too, but I also think others see an even better defensive player. Plus there are some wild cards in late commitments that have changed theories on what type of back Iowa wants (i.e. Bullock & Canzeri). I for one think RBs much over 235 lbs are too big...though there are exceptions.

#1 - Coker: Anyone who thinks he isn't #1 didn't notice that he probably was the best Frosh RB Iowa has ever had. He has some break away speed, Quick to the hole, runs with great power and balance, and I don't remember ever seeing him fall backwards on a run. The only question is how much he improves as a blocker because I attribute that to Stanzi's backslide late in the year.

#2 - Johnson: I give him the #2 spot because he has been in the system and has a leg up. If this kid is recovered from his knee injury he will give the team a back that is a lot like Jewel Hampton. Which is what we were missing last year. Hopefully he gives us the speed back we need.

#3 - McCall: I see a RB that runs a lot like Coker and that is why I think he is the best RB of all the recruits. He has power and speed and makes an excellent cut. Again like always it comes down to how well he blocks.

#4 - Canzeri: I see this kid as a return man cutting his teeth on the Special Teams but I also see him getting a few snaps as a RB/Slot man. I can't wait to see what he does at like 190 lbs because he looks dynamic.

Redshirt - Coe: He is the player with the most talk coming from this class at Iowa. I just think he is too big and too good on defense to keep him on offense. When I watch him I see a slow plodding back. He is not quick and we all know the abuse that Adam Robinson took because he was slow to the hole. I know Coe is bigger but so will be the DL, LB, DB in College. He will be hit a lot because he isn't quick to the hole. This will be his time to determine can he play RB or should he be a LB or DE.

Redshirt - Bullock: Not sure if he plays defense or offense. I actually liked his video on offense. He made great quick decisions and had good cuts and quick to the hole. I have also heard he is probably playing defense and he looked like a solid DB.

Black Sheep - Robinson: I can actually see him coming back to the team. I hope the kid gets a chance either from Iowa or another school. I am not a huge fan of him as a starting RB but he would make a great 3rd Down back. And I think he knows if he gets back on the team he has an uphill battle with Coker there.

Whether I am right or wrong I just want to see this group of RBs have a great year and take pressure off the defense and QB that will be trying to find themselves after the losses that have happened.

That is a good list. Only change I would make in my list would be to replace McCall with Coe. There is too many different options to choose from with all of these talented underclassmen. It would almost make it easier if Robinson didn't come back, but I strongly believe he deserves a chance.

Good post. Very unproven backfield. I bet practices will be fun, lots of competing for PT.

If AROB doesnt get back on the team. I imagine Coker gets 30 carries a game.

IF Robinson comes back (I have to wait and see, to decide if he deserves a shot), then I'd put him at #2. He's done a lot of good things for us, and he's a good back. Great 3rd down back, with his receiving and blocking skills, not to mention his ability to get you just enough to move the chains when you really need it.

Coe I'd move to defense, I think he's got more potential there. We like bigger backs, but Coe will be up above 250 with Doyle. Shonn Greene was only 230, and he was a monster. 250+ is just too big for a back, IMO.

If you look closely I see Coe being a defensive player. I have him as a redshirt because I think the coaches will let him practice as an RB and let him figure out that he is not going to be a good RB. People need to watch the tape of him. He takes direct snaps and is still slow to the hole. Just think if he has to wait for a hand off. The kid was great against HS that were his speed and slower and 50 lbs lighter. Just wait until the LBs are the same size and speed as him. He is not a RB, 230 or 235 lbs is ideal for a big back...he has that plus 20 lbs....too much and he is slow to the hole. Plus being 6'3 or 6'4 he runs too upright. Shonn Greene was 5'11 and 230 so he ran behind his pads. Coker is 6' 230 and runs behind his. McCall is the Stud in 2011 recruiting class RBs and even the coaching staff has said he is probably playing this year. While Coe they have said will be allowed to try RB, not that he will play.

I think AROB may come back and he and COKER will be the top two at start of season. I expect big things from Johnson and think we have forgotten him. He will be good, real good and will compliment Coker and McCall or Coe's style nicely

Canzeri has stated several times that he and the coaches plan for him to red shirt. The coaches have also stated Coe is a running back unless he gets too big. I think Coe, McCall, and Johnson battle for #2. Right now it's hard to tell who has the advantage.

I can see Canzeri redshirting but I think with the losses of Return men that he will get a serious look as a KR and PR. And his explosiveness will give us the return man we haven't had since dwight. McCall is the guy I think will come in and really impress like Coker did. I can see him becoming #2.

He's going to get "too big". I believe I read somewhere that he also has a really low body fat percentage, so he doesn't have much to trim off as it is. I have a hard time seeing him making weight once he starts working with Doyle.

I completely agree with this. While Coe's tape was impressive it's pretty easy to pick out the plays in which he is successful simple because he is much bigger, faster, stronger than everyone else. That's not to say that i don't think he can be a successful RB but i think his future is on the other side of the ball. IF and only IF he wants to play Defense. The worst thing the coaches could do is waste his talents by putting him somewhere he isn't 100% committed to.

There are exceptions to every rule but Coe is coming in at 6'4 250...and he is 17 or 18 tell me he won't grow any...I doubt that and he is slower than Bell was. The kid takes forever to get going where Bell was ran indoor track for Iowa...big difference.

Count me as another that wasn't too impressed w/ Coe's tape. (And I really dislike knocking a 17-18 year-old kid, unless there's plenty of reason, but I've spoken w/ friends that feel similarly.) I agree that his feet don't look very quick, nor does he look particularly fast or shifty. He just looks bigger, stronger, and faster than most of his competition, and we all know that will generally no longer be the case. My question is do you put him at LB or DE? I'm actually thinking of letting him put on 20 lbs. and use him as a DE, but I'll trust the coaches on this one whether it be RB, LB or DE, though I really hope he isn't lined up as a RB.

Coe is a great athlete and many of the "not to good" type comments are really over the top. He would be a great smash mouth back. He may be a great DE. Let's see how it plays out

This plus the majority of people wouldn't know what to look for in tapes anyway. What tape did you watch you tube? We are extremely lucky to have Coe, and if you don't think so go back and look at his offer sheet.

One factor that folks aren't accounting for is that Coe played on a pretty mediocre team. However, on the flip side, at least his team was schematically similar to Iowa. Thus, if the similarities are as close as he's suggested, the transition scheme-wise might be easier for him to get used to.

Another thing is that Coe is physically mature enough that it shouldn't be too overwhelming for him to step up and handle the blocking responsibilities of the job. Furthermore, consider that Coe has pretty nice ball skills, so he could prove to be a threat when it comes to catching the ball out of the backfield.
