Rank 'em

With the passing of Bill Brashier, I got to thinking about the 3 DC's we've had in the past 40 years (other than Bob Elliott who wasn't bad either).

How would you rank these 3 DC's?

I'd go with 1) Phil, 2) Norm, and 3) Bill. I can see them in any order, but I think Phil is #1 and the other two are 2a and 2b (or 1b and 1c?). No matter what, there is no program in this time period that can say they have anywhere near the coordinators on one side of the ball than we've had.

Phil definitely #1 by a long ways, the other two are a toss up. Part of me wants to say Norm #2 but it’s probably recency bias.

Between Norm and Phil Norm got the ball rolling with the Iowa style and mentality of defense. He set the standard and tone that still lives today. But, Phil kept the best parts of Norm's D and modernized/built on it. The Cash position, more blitzing, more stunting, but all within the framework of a rock solid base D.

Bill. Why?

No West
Pass Happy amazing O's in the Big
Iowa O not set up to put D in best place.
Tippett
Station

What they did to OK, Nebby, and UCLA in the early years.

OK was in '79 but the other two games were both in 1981, IIRC. '81 was probably the best single year of defense in the history of Hawkeye football.

Yes, the 79 game was astonishing. Sims had 36 yards in the first half. 6-7 game into the 4th and 6-14 with 3.36 to play. 5 turnovers. OK lost to Texas on the road and beat undefeated FSU in the Orange Bowl.

That's a good point about the West. Had to get after it against the best every year.
