Random Recruiting Thought at 6:00 a.m.

It's early and my brain might be a bit sleepy so bear with me as I ramble.

With the enthusiasm starting to show regarding the Iowa Basketball Program, when the change in style becomes apparant next season, do we see an uptick in the recruiting for the 2012 class and beyond?

It appears we have already started to see that uptick with Salter coming in for a visit this past weekend. I am just wondering if we see a much larger jump in the players showing up on campus for visits.

If so, this would be great news with the top rated recruits around the state for the next few years. With 4 D-1 schools in the mix, the State of Iowa will never produce enough recruits to keep all the schools at the top of their respective leagues. While we all hope Iowa dominates getting these kids to campus, it will take a 1 or 2 of these recruits with 1 pr 2 out of state recruits each year to put us back where we want to be.

With what we have seen in the short 2 months Fran has been on campus I think this is the direction we will see the recruiting trail take. Already on staff, one assistant to go after the East Coast players, one to work hard on the Iowa players, and I am betting the final piece of the puzzle will be someone with contacts across the Midwest.

Great Staff + Exciting Style of Play + Opportunity to play in the Big Ten = RESULTS!!

The next few years are shaping up to be an exciting time for Iowa Basketball.

I sure hope so but the realistic side of me believes we will be going back to the type of recruits that Tom Davis brought in which in our state of the program today is great. I really like Fran but I really feel like it will be hard to get the top kids in the country. Hopefully i'm wrong but I see the same type of success as the Dr. had and I will take that any day!

I don't know what the other D1 programs in the state have anything to do with our recruiting success or lack thereof. It isn't like we are losing top in-state recruiting battles. We either fail to recruit guys and they go to UNI and kick our butts, or we get beat out by Roy Williams.

The question as I see it is whether McCaffery can recruit outside of Iowa's borders. Time will tell. I don't think there's much argument that if all we ever recruit is the state of Iowa, we are going to be in trouble. By the way, Tom Davis' recruiting wasn't all that bad. I could live with the type of players we had at Iowa during his days.

At least we're now getting a visit from a juco PG. I remember there was a pair of Juco PG's that Lickliter couldn't even get to make a visit after year 2 when we lost 4 players to transfer. It was "thanks but no thanks" from Armstead, and I don't remember the other PG's name.

Also, McCaffery got Basabe to follow him to Iowa, but I don't remember any recruits following Lickliter to Iowa. So things already look better to me than they did in the previous tenure.

This isn't horseshoes or hand grenades though.. We need to keep getting commitments. Almost getting a commitment, finishing 2nd in a recruiting battle, etc. isn't good enough.
