Question for Jon regarding Bulaga and Spievey?

Jon,

After listening to what Norm Parker said a couple of days ago regarding Clayborn and Spievey, what is your gut feeling regarding Spievey turning pro and also Bulaga? Any chance we can get Bulaga and Spievey to come back for their Senior seasons. What about Dace Richardson? I know. I am getting greety, but I am just estatic thinking about the potential for a HUGE year in 2010. After 2010, all bets are off. We might take a few steps back.

Awesome news today regarding Clayborn.

I thought you were "BANKING" on them coming back already????

I am banking on Bulaga coming back and I also said that I am banking on Clayborn coming back. I am not sure about Spievey. I have just listened to Norm Parker and Norm thinks that Spievey and Clayborn will be back. And Clayborn just announced today.

If they both come back:

Bulaga, Reiff, Koeppel, Vandervelde, Richardson

If they both leave:

Reiff, Gettis, Koeppel, Vandervelde, Zusevics

with Ferentz, MacMillan and Haganman as next men in. Donnal could come in and impress as well as a true frosh. Plenty of talent, but wet behind the ears.

Two very different looking lines. I too am concerned.

I think Speivey is gone. I haven't looked enough at NFL teams to see who would take a Left Tackle in the first round but the teams I can think of right off the top are Minny, Green Bay, Buffalo, and Seattle. If you think that Bulaga is a top 4 Left tackle (and I do) than it stands to reason he could leave. If both Bulaga and Richardson are gone I think the Oline looks like this
Lt- Reiff
Lg- Vandervelde
C- Koeppel/ Ferentz
Rg- Gettis
Rt- Zucevics/ Orne

Some of the red shirts from this season could jump into the mix and I think that Haganman and Casey McMillan could make some noise as well. If the unit is healthy throughout camp they may perform as well or better than this season's mash unit. Reiff will play at Tackle next season no matter what happens with Bulaga. He will be the Right Tackle if Bulaga comes back.

Even if Bulaga goes, I don't think the offense is worst, production wise and points wise, next year than it was this year. Next years defense and special teams, like many of the Ferentz era, are going to be good enough to where as long as the offense (Stanzi) can cut down on his turnovers, they will be good enough

I haven't looked at the schedule, but replacing Eubanks, Dace, Calloway and BB scares me especially in the early part of the season. It always takes a while for an O-line to gel, but this this could be a huge dropoff IMO. As always these kids were starters and seeing the field first for a reason.

On the positive side if Dace and BB were to come back we could be dominating. The after the game announcements will go a long ways in determining what 2010 will be like for Hawkeye fans.

Of couse if Amari and Clayborn stay 14 points a game from the offense might be enough if we can eleminate the pick sixes.

I have a "hypothetical" question - if a certain player didn't take his finals would that possibly make that player not eligible for the bowl game?

I don't think it matters as long as the 0 on the finals doesn't take his overall GPA below the minimum requirement...and also who are you referring to? Usually when someone asks a hypothetical there is something behind it...

grades are to be released jan 2nd i believe. So yes..there's a specific limit that a cumulative GPA can't drop below, (say 2.0 I believe for upperclassmen)...so if his overall GPA is below 2.0 he probably won't be eligible to play

Bulaga wasn't on Kiper's big board today. Donahue was rated #1 junior punter and Bulaga was 2nd junior tackle.

Rumor is Spiv has already checked out. I hope what I am hearing is wrong but close sources say that he decided at the end of the year to help is family. His mom is even talking to friends and family about the jump to the NFL.

Norm Parker says Spievey needs another year and says that anybody that thinks Spievey is leaving early is crazy.

I will be SHOCKED if spievey stays. No sources just from the rumbles of others. Of course Norm wants them to stay and Amari won't be a 1st round unless he excels at the Combine so that is probably why he says he "Thinks" He should stay.

Norm Parker is Iowa's D coordinator for the bowl game, you heard it here first! Bank it! Maybe I should start a new thread for this inside info.....
