Never let a good crisis go to waste, in this case slamming Ferentz and his staff, eh Dodd?

A massive rhabdo scandal at Iowa shocked a lot of us in 2011. A school-led investigation concluded 13 players who were hospitalized "acquired" the syndrome. No Iowa staffer was found negligent.

Rhabdo is not "acquired." It is a medical condition, not a virus. In this setting, college athletes are pushed beyond their bodies' limits by superiors who control their fate in the weight room and/or on the roster.

Dodd was right about Rhabdo the first time around, only crazy fans make him out as some kind of super villain. Its a case of "I can shit on the Hawks all day, but when someone else says something about KF....."

I wouldn't call what Dodd wrote a 'slamming' of KF or Doyle so much as just stating the facts from history... He didn't sugar coat it but he didn't rant and rave either. Does anyone disagree with what he wrote? The only opinion type of phrase he had in that whole deal wsa that a lot of us were 'shocked' in 2011. Hardly a slam so much as just stating truth..

As a fan base we need to stop feeding trolls. Their main objective is to get hits and 99% of the stuff they say and write is to get a reaction from whoever they are going after. It is frustrating and difficult at times to not take the bait, but Iowa is not alone on this. Dodd went after Aaron Rodgers for not doing an interview when Wisconsin went to the Final Four.

He is an equal opportunity troll when it comes to feeling slighted by anyone... There are a lot of times I feel that there is a back story when it comes to guys like Dodd, Finebaum, Forde and Cowheard taking shots at Iowa any chance they get?

Agree with you on this... It was really tough to defend anything that was written back in 2011... Really tough off-season!!!

The rhabdo thing was ages ago. Anyone in the program at that time probably has grade school age children by now. Who cares what Dodd says? It's in the distant past and has no relevance.

No doubt about it that history usually factors into the stories/opinions that those columnists/pundits or whatever you want to label them as have had with those they are covering. I remember back when Jim Rome had a beef with KF. Back in 02ish I believe when Iowa had that magical year he wanted to interview him for his show but KF said no thanks. From then on Rome never had anything good to say about Iowa for quite awhile... (Even though Iowa had 2 more top 10 finishes after that in a row) Some in the media have longer memories then others and hold grudges too. They are human and not nearly as 'professional' as they'd like to come off as all the time that's for sure

Now that you mention that I'd be curious about a follow up/where are they now kinda deal on those 13 kids that were involved....

Pretty sure rhabdo is acquired. It's acquired by going crazy with weights.

And nothing the article wrote was untrue, 13 kids did in fact acquire rhabdomyolisis from being pushed past their limits by Iowa staff, and it sure as hell was a scandal. I never understand why people bitch about media stories that are actually true. Scandals get brought up all the time from all different schools and Iowa sure isn't the only one.

So I'm assuming you think there should be a time limit where reporters aren't allowed to talk about the past? You sound like a jilted Penn State fan.

Look I'm all for complaining if some hack reporter is lying or trying to pass an op-ed off as news, but whining about reporters citing past history and sources is bush league.

And KF deserves every bit of criticism he gets for that mess, even years later. Not only for the incident itself but for how he handled it (hoped it would go away instead of addressing it and apologizing, thus allowing everyone to rip his program) and how he invented an award to give to Doyle after it.

What kind of pussy blames the motivator if something goes wrong? You are in control of how hard you work. Doyle didn't "make them work to hard". He motivated them to work hard and they pushed themselves too hard. More than likely due to drinking the night before.

Fear factor. I wonder who had the power to instill fear in that setting? Coaches? Or players?
