QC Times Article On McCaffrey

Fran's the man for turning around a b-ball program

Not sure how to add a link so hope that works.

The following got me excited:

"Jameson played on teams at Greensboro that had lost 39 games in the two seasons before McCaffery’s arrival.

"From Day 1 when he held his first meeting with our team, it was a 180-degree turnaround,” Jameson said. “Everything became detail-oriented. Coach is a stickler for fundamentals and preparation. We were as well-prepared as any team could be. He and his staff put in the work, and it’s visible. Players sense that and respond with the same type of effort."

and this...

“He’ll have his players knowing and believing that they can compete against the best. The more they succeed, the more success they will want,” said Mike Polaha, who arrived at Lehigh the same year McCaffery was hired as an assistant coach and captained the first two teams he coached there.

“He stepped into one of the worst programs in Division I basketball at Lehigh, but by the time my career ended, he had us all exuding confidence and believing in ourselves. He did a fantastic job of selling, motivating and convincing us that we could execute the Xs and Os behind his vision. His words had traction.”

Especially the effort part. While I am sure Coach Lick put in effort, his actions on the bench were less than inspiring. Seeing his face planted in his palm game after game drove me nuts. I think that attitude showed in the way the players played also. They seemed to be unmotivated. So, if Fran is a better motivator we could see a nice improvement in the play of our returning players. I sure hope so.

Go Hawks!

I read this article earlier today. Very good. It made me pretty excited about the upcoming season. I have very good feeling about what Fran can do for the basketball program.

Similarities between Raveling and Lick's bench style. George in his sweat suit laying down at the end of the bench and Lick with anguish plastered all over his face. Similarities between Coach Davis and Coach Mac's playing style. Maybe it will be a case of Deja Vu all over again. Of course, I don't mean to imply that we will make the Elite Eight in the Tournament, But I really expect to see vast improvement.

I liked the article. None of the self-promotion that you might hear coming from somewhere else, just a steadfast determination to get the job done.

As we see with football, a scheme can be a bit of an equalizer. Yes, when a great team plays a below average team, they stop the spread, but it keeps games closer for longer and once in a while, spawns an upset.

I don't know how many wins we get this year, but I'm thinking 14 with a trip to the NIT as a distant possibility. But what I feel very confident about is that Iowa is going to be going into the final ten minutes, very much in the game more often than not.

Only time will tell. I guess we have time to give if things start to make a turn for the better. I wish him the best. I want to see Carver rocking again.

Not to slip back into the "dump on Lick" mode, but this line made me shake my head and say "WTF?!"...all over again.

as he tries to jumpstart an Iowa offense that failed to reach 20 points by halftime on six occasions a year ago

I remember watching some of our OOC games the past couple years, and even though we were winning, I literally was getting sleepy while watching the game because it was just so dull. It will be nice watching a team led by a coach who isn't afraid to put 80+ points on the board. We might actually see a few fast breaks this year..

Winning is all that really matters when it comes down to it, and I hated the losing even more than the style of play, but I'm glad that the "walk it down the floor" style of play is behind us.

We might not win a lot of games this year, but I'm excited to see the new style of play and to enjoy watching the Hawks play again.

I defended Lickliter right up until the writing was on the wall, but even I can't defend that.

Or at the very least it gives you the opportunity to come from behind. I think too many times when Lick's teams would get down the game was essentially over. When you can score quick, you always have a chance.

Agreed. Even worse with those sub 20 halfs was most of the time we were also down 20 at half! With all that time we were eating with every single possession, I was beyond flabbergasted how we could be down 20+ at half.

I think the biggest change between the coaching styles will be the availability of easy buckets with this type of offense. Lick's teams never got fast break points which just kills a team, because you cannot shoot lights out every night in the Big Ten. This is especially true when every other team that comes into the gym has a significant athleticism advantage outside of the few bottom feeders. I cannot wait to see an Iowa team push the tempo and get some easy points this season.

Good point. Seems like there were lots of times where Tom Davis' teams were able to erase double digit deficits and come back to win, or at least have a shot. Between the press and the up-tempo style, those teams could put a quick 10-2 run on you in just a couple minutes.

When your offense is set at a pace to score 50 points a game, a 10-12 point deficit is more like 20..

I remember seeing Lick's teams down something like 10 points with 3 minutes or so to go, yet still were acting like they were milking the clock. It makes me think the team didn't even practice such a thing as a "hurry-up offense" and didn't know any other way to play.

Another good point. There were no easy baskets in Lick's system unless the execution was flawless or the other team had a defensive breakdown.
