QB Matthew Baldwin

Iowa visited and offered him this week, and are visiting other QBs as well. Has to make you wonder what their confidence level is in securing Duggan. He recently had a personal visit from James Franklin, and you can bet Frost (assuming he ends up in Lincoln) will make him a high priority.

Baldwin is currently committed to Colorado State and has some nice highlights. His offer list is perplexing. The majority are low to mid tier programs, but, interestingly, Ohio State actually offered him recently even though he's not really considered a dual-threat QB. Even Kansas, Indiana and Tulsa, which he lists as interests, haven't offered.

Iowa wants a QB in every recruiting class, they were always going to take a '18 QB regardless of what Duggan does.

I know that's the general thought, but assuming Weigers returns, and with Mansell coming off a redshirt, the need for a QB in '18 probably is lessened. I do find it telling that they would wait this long to suddenly be scrambling to add a QB this cycle.

My other thought is that there is a recent rumor that Boyle is transferring. If that is the case, it may have prompted them to suddenly make adding another QB a priority.

Either way, I think they have a big hill to climb for Duggan. I'm not confident at all of our chances there.

Boyle leaving makes sense, he won't see the field as a QB at this level.

I think Iowa has been looking and evaluating. It isn't like they started looking 2 days ago and then offered yesterday. I'm sure they were evaluating a bunch of QB's with the idea of offering after the season.

but i think the point is that Duggan has been, far and away, Iowa's #1 target. Now, we're still in '17 and we might possibly be worried about not signing our top '19 QB, a kid from Iowa? First, it's probably to early, right? I mean, they're kids and to them 12 months is a long, long time. but, i will continue to believe that our offensive performance will dictate whether we land Duggan or not. This season, in my estimation, our offense caused us at least 4 games. recruits notice that.

Max didn’t grow up a Hawk fan so it isn’t like Iowa has some inside track on him. He is always way closer to Nebraska and ISU for that matter so it isn’t like Iowa is his hometown/close school either. It is gonna be tough beating Penn St and Nebraska (with Frost) for him, as their offense fits him better.

I'm not being critical of Iowa's recruiting tactics. I have no doubt that they have been evaluating for quite awhile, but, nevertheless, putting your hat in the ring a couple of weeks before early signing is odd for this coaching staff, and may be a sign of either a roster change or some behind the scene recruiting realization.

Do you mind disclosing how you know Max didn't grow up a Hawk fan? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm on another pay sight and the moderator was is HS scout for that site. His opinion over the summer that Max was most definitely Iowa's to lose. So, if that is happening, then, first it's because of what Iowa did or didn't show this season and Frost/kNU and PSU attention. But, Iowa opened the door, if Max is now a higher level of disinterested in Iowa.

I am a pay member as well, and lots of very exciting things were said recently about Max's dad liking Iowa the best. Yet when kids grow up Hawk fans you can tell in interviews, or people know the family and report it, etc. Nothing like that has come out about Max. Maybe he is, but I have yet to even see a rumor that he is or grew up a Hawk fan. Kind of like Wagonner or Oliver Martin, both were clearly Hawk fans. Doesn't mean we will get them, just they were Hawk fans growing up.

I read somewhere that max was waiting to see if Campbell was sticking around. With the coaching change at nebby he may end up there, if say this is a sign he won't be in black and gold

His hudl highlights are below. I like this kids video, but I think we already have this "talent" in Peyton Mansell. Because of that, I think we should take Spencer Petras who we just offered. Check out the thread on this board. Per Rob, he is planning to visit Iowa and is currently a verbal to Oregon State. Here's his hudl: http://www.hudl.com/profile/4269390/spencer-petras.

Getting either Petras or Baldwin would lessen the importance of getting Duggan. I want Duggan for sure but is he really better than Baldwin, who I prefer over Petras?

I like Duggan better but it's hard to say what they'll do at the next level. I think Iowa is better positioned with Duggan than it is with Baldwin, however. The Hawkeyes were late to the party on Baldwin and offered after Ohio State.

rob, do you think baldwin is similar to Mansell?

I could see that comparison, especially with them both being from Texas. I think PM is probably a better athlete and MB probably has a stronger arm.
